Palin: Say in ain't so, Joe |
|
This is just an observation, but at the beginning of the debate, Sarah Palin asked Joe Biden for permission to call him Joe. My first thought was that she wanted to be able to be as familiar with him as she had been with Charlie Gibson, repeating his name frequently. I figured it was a verbal tick that she didn't want to be later accused of being glib for using. But then she never called him Joe. Not once as far as I recall, except for that one time when she said "Say it ain't so, Joe," a reference to the White Sox scandal if I am not mistaken.
Did Sarah Palin ask permission to call Senator Biden by his first name just so she could use that stupid line?

Look at the transcript and search for Joe. There is but one from Palin. Joe referred to himself in the third person several times, but that's his schtick.

My exact thought.
And when she awkwardly threw it in to her nonsensical blather it sounded even more forced and fake than the rest of the crap she spewed. God, I loathe that creature.

I'm thinking if he did, he'd be accused of condescencion.

But then again, he didn't ask specific permission to do so either. If he had asked permission and then not done so, it would have been seen as strange, so why is it not strange that she did ask permission and then never did except in that one toss off line?

27. Obama and Biden are both senators. |
|
They have senatorial privilege to call each-others by their first names (aside from the fact that they are friends and running mates)

Yet another double standard at this debate, Biden wasn't allowed to attack her because it would be "seen" as attacking women, so he had to restrain which left him handicapped, yet he still beat her ass...so score another for team Obama. But then her saying "Can i call you Joe",, PLEASE.... if he had referred to her as "Sarah", the GOP would have been all over his ass about how he disrespected her and didn't treat her like a professional, all while maintaining that he had to be careful what he said in order to share her womanly feelings...gag me, all this Hypocrisy makes my head hurt...

In the previous campaign Obama often refer to McCain as "John" so she was preparing to do the same - if she found an opening.
What surprised me was that her Mic was open before and after the debate. Normally we don't hear them.

I don't think it's the same as obama calling McCain John though. They work together. But the p[oint is that after asking permission she never called him Joe except for that one apparently rehearsed time.

17. She was hoping for another Reaganesque "there you go again" line |
|
It was clearly planned in advance just to inject that line, hoping it would become some kind of magic talisman that summed up her triumph and that would gain media attention. Biden didn't give her any opportunities to use it effectively and she ended up using it to suggest that Biden shouldn't dwell on the past and bring up Bush's failings. It didn't work.

If they had worked with her to memorize it, as was obvious, they didn't do very well.

25. In fact, I believe the complete line was "Say it ain't so, Joe, there you go again" |
|
Modifying an extremely well-known Reaganism in a debate does not occur by accident or as a result of improvisation. It was a set line.

19. I thought she did it to try and act more down to earth |
|
I think she was trying to play the "I'm not a washington gal, can i just call ya Joe, so i don't look all stuffy and political"
I would bet anything that her advisors told her to go out there and lead with that question and make sure it was heard by the audience. That's all she's got are these little tricks to boost her appeal, sorry but i was substance.

28. Yes, and the line fell flat. She didn't time it right. Failure. |

She probably practiced that line over and over again and couldn't wait to use it. :D
