"Can I call you, Joe?"
This question asked by Palin at the beginning of the debate speaks volumes about her character. When greeting Sen. Biden, she sweetly asks him if she could call him Joe. He, as any normal person would think, most likely thought it would set a civil tone to the debate. But the reason she asked was not in the spirit of civility. It was for the purpose of mean spiritedness and for use in reciting comments that were for the purpose of ridicule. She demonstrated once again that she has no moral compass.

12. that is exactly correct and Biden was way smart for always referring to her as "Governor"
can you imagine if her called her by her name even once? The Mccain camp and some in the media would have been crying sexisim.

14. That is EXACTLY what it was. Nothing more than a set-up clearing the way for that
smarmy second-hand schtick. She can't even come up with something original, and the "say it ain't so, Joe. There you go again" is overkill. You don't bunch all your folksy-isms into the same paragraph together. A little goes a long way.

Moral of the story: if she pats you on the back, just be aware that all she's doing is searching for the best place in which to plunge a knife.

She's ruthless, mean-spirited, and calculating as hell. And there was NOTHING genuine or friendly about it. It was COLDLY CALCULATED to score a point. Which means we have to be very careful to assess EVERY SENTENCE that rolls off her forked tongue. ALWAYS. Every single sentence. EVERYTHING she says and does needs to be regarded carefully and with suspicion, and examined for an ulterior motive. ALWAYS look for the lizard-brain mentality in there. It'll always be close to the surface.

Don't EVER drop your guard against a predator like this. NOT EVER.

18. True. And I think it served another purpose -
She said it very loudly, as if she was trying to prove to America that SHE would ask someone before addressing them by first name, even though Obama didn't "ask" McCain (although they're clearly entitled to address each other as such because they know each other quite well).

This annoyed me even more than the prep for the "Say it ain't so, Joe" line - she was trying to make a character generalization about Obama.

35. The full line was "Say it ain't so, Joe, there you go again"
She was hoping that the modified Ronald Reagan line would get a lot of media attention and be a highpoint. It didn't and it wasn't. But it was obviouly pre-planned. No obvious take-off on Ronald Reagan occurs by chance.

.... it was a clear attempt to combat the "McCain was too impersonal, refusing to look Obama in the eyes" thing.

I bet there will be all kinds of weird forced hugging attempted by McCain Tuesday night.

13. David Letterman called her out on that on Friday...
... during his interview with Brian Williams.

I thought she was being polite initially, but I watched again after Letterman's contention. He was right.

She aggressively asked, "Can I call you, Joe?" upon meeting him on stage. She was making sure to set up her, "Say it ain't so, Joe" gag.

19. I completely agree on that point. She READ that damn "say it ain't so Joe" thing from a card.
I watched the clip and it was a rehearsed line. I'm not sure what is more pathetic -- the fact that she said it, or the fact that it had to be written out for her. Another tool, just like George Bush.

During the first debate, Obama kept saying John instead of senator. I've been hearing it from pubbies about how disrespectful Obama was. So when I heard Palin asked Biden that question, I just shook my head.
