This from a conservative writer in a conservative newspaper:
John McCain's vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, is out on the stump saying the Sen. Barack Obama has been "palling around" with terrorists.

(snip)

Some people might refer to that as both guilty by association and stretching the truth.

I wonder if it will lead the Obama camp to point out McCain's friendship with the 1960s radical David Ifshin.

In 1970, Ifshin was president of the National Student Association. That year he actually traveled to Hanoi and urged American troops to rebel against the Vietnam War. Radio Hanoi broadcast his remarks. He even made the cover of Life magazine, standing behind Jane Fonda. People called him a traitor. They said that he may have cost American lives.

And yet, McCain was the guy's pal.

A clever advertising man could point out that when Ifshin died of cancer a few years back, McCain attended the funeral and spoke of how Ifshin "always felt passionate about his country." Adding, ''I learned a lot about courage from David."

It's all true. And a campaign operative could end it there.

What it DOESN'T tell you is that Ifshin changed, becoming much more respectable in later life. (Sort of like Ayers.) And that he and McCain reconciled about Vietnam.

McCain said that their relationship proved how futile it was to look back in anger.

Unless, it turns out, you have an opportunity to use such an association, no matter how tenuous, against a political opponent.

21. Welcome to DU!
Here's a glossary of some of the terms you'll find in use here, K&R among them:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_oet&address=358x190

(To answer your specific question: it stands for "Kicked and Recommended". "Kicked" means you are replying to the thread, which bumps it back up to the top of the list in its category -- they are sorted by last activity. "Recommended" means you are nominating the post for the "Greatest" page -- if a thread gets 5 nominations, it goes to the "Greatest" page where it is sorted by the number of nominations it has received in the right column).

10. And Obama should use this to completely neutralize Ayers
Instead of the "Oh yeah? what about you?!" kind of argument, use it as a "Ifshin and Ayers are both reformed and have become good citizens, dedicated to bettering their communities, right John?" Kind of argument. Completely neutralizing the entire Ayers argument and coming out still on the high road and smelling like a rose.

But, it does sound like a bit of Obama's political jujitsu. I hope he does.

Love the name by the way. I grew up in Indiana and attended the famed race several times. Indiana may be known as a basketball state but, I tell ya it breathes racing! They race everything there. AND since words are my life, I always appreciate great wit!

either. Ayers isn't runnnig for office and I think Obama would not go there as he wouldn't want similar to happen in this story or the family of the departed. McCain has whole sewage factory of stuff to highlight on the economy alone, we don't even need any more than that really.

25. wrong
there are right wing dogs in this country who have hung on to Ayers like fresh meat.

you HAVE TO fight back to hit their fear centers - to bring up the McCain association serves to neutralize that fear-inducing Ayers meme.

If Democrats have learned anything over the last two decades, I hope to hell they have learned to bitch slap back. HARD.

This is the only thing that reaches low-info voters.

34. I didn't coin the term
the msm has adopted this term.

I'm not sure what the demographic is, tho my usual suspects are fundamentalist right wingers and the Fox News/Rush limbaugh's radio audience since a Pew Poll showed these voters were not only uninformed, they were misinformed. Because they tune into media that lies to them. And the vicious circle continues.

McCain and Ifshin
Editorial of The New York Sun | May 17, 2006

"Mr. McCain said. "He had come once to the capitol of the country that held me prisoner, that deprived me and my dearest friends of our most basic rights, and that murdered some of us. He came to that place to denounce our country's involvement in the war that had led us there. His speech was broadcast into our cells. I thought it a grievous wrong and I still do."

44. I think we should leave this one alone
I am only saying this because David Ifshin was a close friend of Al Franken. Al spoke about this in his book "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them".

It can be read about here:http://books.google.com/books?id=igqMIP7OjrAC&pg=PA175&lpg=PA175&dq=al+franken+and+david+ifshin&source=web&ots=AslRLVS2Qq&sig=x-J3LjRZG1ygz9w1kn9_qX4zLlw&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPA175,M1

if wailin palin doesn't stop w/ the attacks (slim chance of that), obama should stand-up at the next debate, face mccain, ask him if he remembers mr. ifshin, then tell john that he has nothing to regret about their relationship, just like he (obama) has nothing to regret about his relationship w/ ayers
