This is what we Southerners are up against:
A lot of people have been talking about the SouthernStrategy that McPalin has been using lately and talking about the dumb rednecks of the South. Well, here is what we are up against:

Voter registration, a mouse head, and the ‘08 presidential contest
Monday, October 13, 2008, 01:54 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Things are getting tense out there, people.

The chairman of the Pike County Democratic party says she found a cooked, severed mouse head in a take-out meal after a confrontation with the husband of the restaurant owner — who allegedly accused her of registering “gutter scum” for the coming Nov. 4 election.

“Without saying it, he was referring to black people in no uncertain words,” she said.

Melissa Wade, who owns a local four-wheeler dealership, has filed a complaint with local law enforcement authorities, and has gone to the local health department. Zebulon police released a one paragraph summation of the incident this afternoon.

3. I hope!
I want them to know what its like to be completely out of power and with no hope of getting it back for a while.

As for the story, I personally know Melissa and she's one of the most honest people on earth. This kind of crap pisses me off. Luckily, we have a fine Democrat for our Ag Commissioner who doesn't take this kind of stuff lightly. Methinks those people are going out of business soon.

26. See, but they have a choice.
They can choose to put down their hate. They choose not to, but they're a dying breed. Obama's ascendancy is evidence of that.

2. McCain and Palin should be ashamed of their actions!
They have condoned racism by allowing this to continue! And the RW pundit wackos have done the same!

McCain/Palin have set us back 40 years!!

5. I'll never forget
the underhanded tactics of the Jesse Helms campaign against Harvey Gantt in NC, early 90s. On election night we were driving to voters' homes to bring them back to polling places where voting machines had broken down (oddly enough, just in NC's predominantly African-American counties). Every time we sent a car out, Jesse's thugs sent a car out to chase us down, drive erratically, and harangue voters in front of their own homes. To this day, that night includes some of the most disturbing behavior I have ever witnessed.

Chairman pulls list out of her purse and slowly looks down the list. Looks up and says, "No, but if you like I can give you a registration card to fill out!"

18. Hi Ruby. I live in Knoxville, TN where, as you know, some of
my fellow liberals were KILLED simply because of their beliefs.

And, as you know, we're in the minority, but we're not completely non-existant.

The difference between the South and the more liberal North is quite simply that we have more rural areas that don't have access to any other news besides conservative talk radio. Bigger cities, more often found in the Northeast, have loads of urban, progressive-thinking people AND a variety of news sources. In the larger cities in the South, like Memphis and Atlanta, we have lots of progressives, too. It's just that we don't have that many very large cities.

I wish I could get a grant to study just how lack of news choice makes an area more "red," while more "blue" areas have a variety of opinions given to their citizens.

21. but they all have access to the same info on the net that we all do
And they choose ignorance for the most part. Don't you think?

And the whites in Memphis? I know for a fact that they're voting against Obama (not FOR McSame).

So, it's not just access to a wider, more progressive media. It's bigotry and Willful ignorance!

Btw, I'm from K-patch, my husband is from Memphis; we now live in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Last night my car was keyed when parked in a parking lot outside of a redneck eatery (Golden Corral). My homemade Obama sign was very visible in the back seat of my car. I should have known better. I thought about it, but said 'nawwwww, it doesn't matter' to my hubby. Wrong.

Sorry, this southerner cannot defend the south.

24. The city of Memphis proper is blue, but
go out into the burbs and it is red, red, red. It's not that I think things can't or won't change, and it would never do to give up, but it is largely a cultural reason for the disparity. Our media in Memphis is terrible, which doesn't help.

19. the southern strategy
Obviously, there is not enough seafood involved. No person from New Orleans could ever side with those idiot redneck white-trash fuck-sucks in the rest of Louisiana (excluding a good part of Louisiana, including Baton Rouge and Lafayette). God damn it... where I live now... the shrimp... god fuck... can I please get some decent shrimp?
