What unusual types of stocks would be wise investments if Obama wins? |
|
How about these?
- Companies that grow marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Lots of states have laws on the books that legalize marijuana for medical purposes, but during Bush's term the federal government has cracked down on these (John Ashcroft, specifically).
I believe an Obama administration would no longer go after states that legalize marijuana and that many more states will pass laws legalizing it.
This could be a "growth" industry... literally and figuratively.
- Companies involved in stem-cell research. I think Obama will open up stem-cell research and there will be an explosion of research grants.
What others?
Bottom line: I think an Obama administration will unshackle science and that there will be LOTS of money to be made by investing in companies involved in all kinds of scientific research... alternative energy, medicine, etc.

Green energy and green technology. My husband and I checked out to see if we could invest some of our 401k in Green technology but we don't have any options. But if we did that is where I would invest right now.

3. As Far as Green Companies Go, |
|
Alternative energy stocks tend to rise and fall with the price of oil. So you're betting as much on oil prices as the future of the industry.
Other green companies may depend on economics or regulation. For example, high heating oil and gas prices stimulate homeowners to buy insulation. Or there regulations for new constuction may be introduced that require certain insulation standards. Both would be good for companies in that industry.
Because so many companies are small and unpredictable, an ETF might be better than individual stock if you can find one that matches your interest. For example, wind power seems to be the most commercial of the alternate energy sources, and PWND is a newly creted fund that trades like a stock.
