Score one for KO: My single-issue (abortion) grandma voting for Obama
Well, score one for both KO and BO I guess. My grandma is 80 years old, very religious (Catholic) and always votes Republican. My mom told me tonight that grandma's been watching a lot of Keith Olbermann lately, and has decided to vote for Obama. I asked how she could possibly square this with her single-issue voting on abortion.

She said that my grandma said, "Well, he's a thinker and a smart guy. I'm sure in time he'll come around to my point of view."

Hey, whatever works.

:patriot:

1. Perhaps your grandma knows that one can have that point of view

3. *If* the topic comes up again, remind her that Obama's goal is to reduce abortions, too...

We've had lots of Republicans talk a lot about the abortion issue and then get elected, only to have nothing happen.

Obama wants to reduce abortions using something other than a law people will get around -- and possibly get hurt in the process.

With a churchgoing President who's looking for ways to compromise with Republicans and who believes in having faith-based organizations help the government to achieve common (but secular, though you don't have to add that word) goals, electing Obama may be the only way to reach agreement on ways to reduce abortions other than draconian legislation.

He can't get *less* done than all the Republicans she's helped to elect over the last few decades, right?

4. I can't and won't be a single-issue voter -
but in certain cases, I do understand it. I was raised as a Catholic, broke with the church in the 70's, but still depend on it in certain ways. I understand your grandma!

She really does get it. How very cool for someone whose life began before commercial air flight, television, easily travelled roads, freezer foods, microwave ovens, and these weird tubes in the internets.........

And who knows? She may be right!

K&R for 80 year old women who vote, who listen, and who continue to learn despite the fact that they can now "lay back and take it easy"!

7. Had a talk with someone
while I was canvassing a few weeks ago.

Like your grandma he was a Catholic one issue voter until now.

He came to realize that the Republican party had their chance and did nothing about abortion and that their only interest in it was to scare up votes. He's going Democrat from now on, tired of being used! He's still anti abortion but knows the Republicans won't do anything.

9. The Republics will never ban abortion.
They had the chance to criminalize abortion when they controlled both houses of Congress and the executive branch from 2002 to 2006. They didn't do it. I always point this out to anti-choice voters. Since neither party is going to give them what they want on this issue, they might as well vote on other issues, and on all other issues most of them agree with Democrats.

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.
