Lines to vote in Northern VA today.
Went to Election Officer training in Fairfax County today (Northern VA). There were 50-some people in line at 9:45 to vote "absentee-in-person" when I went in, and a like number in line when I came out of training at noon. The line seemed to be moving at a slow but steady pace. The county uses scantron sheets and there are only 4 races on the ballot (Prez, Senator, House of Representatives, and a bond issue for county parks) so they can process a lot of voters very quickly.

It's not all Democrats voting. I saw a woman with a pink "Team Sarah" shirt leaving :puke: but our county is very heavily Democratic so it'd be reasonable to guess that most of the voters there were for Obama.

2. I wonder how well we're doing in real Virginia.
Republicans don't bother me lately. They seem harmless when they're out of office.

5. How Are The Real Virginia and Commie Virginia Comments Going Over?
I am surprised at how disparaging the McCain campaign has been of Northern Virginia. Indeed, I don't recall a presidential campaign that actually went out of its way to put down certain geographical areas. Are these comments having any impact on Virginians?

6. didn't hear anything, but
didn't hear anything, but when comments like that have been amde before I hear comments up here about how the rest of the counties sure like our tax dollars. Without the deep blue counties up north and their deep tax base the rural parts of Virginia would look (even more) like Mississippi.

7. they are gambling that they'll get points with the rest of VA by dissing one area
There are people in the rest of VA who also hold the same stereotypes. It's probably analogous to how some upstate New Yorkers see NYC or how people in more rural parts of IL see Chicago.

However, what they forget are:

1) many people in small towns or rural VA are not ignorant, hateful rubes;
2) Charlottesville, Richmond and Tidewater areas are growing more blue all the time and many in those areas don't view NoVA as Joe McCain does;
3) NoVA continues to grow much more rapidly than the rest of the state;
4) this WAS the state of the George Allen Republican but it also is the state of the John Warner Republican, who would never behave that badly. Polite Southern folk may have been offended by such an insult and negative campaign tactic, even if they don't live in NoVA and aren't progressive.
