1. "The October Surprise" is a copyrighted feature of the BFEE, Inc.
Seriously though, when has an OctSurp NOT involved a Bush?

2. Other.
The "October surprise" was not, and will not, be reported upon in the media. It was a behind-the-scenes activity that does not show up in polls. It was that a faction known as the Bush the Elder republicans split quietly, and the majority have refused to support the McCain-Palin ticket. They are backing republican candidates for the House and Senate, but will not support McCain on Election Day. McCain's selection of Sarah Palin is but one of their reasons for taking this position.

4. "Sabotage"
is perhaps too strong a word. I don't think it fits. Rather, they have exercised their right to not support him.

41. your post makes sense,
I just can't see those seasoned GOP'ers in the Senate voting for McCain because of his choice of Palin.
They will not let her in their club. No way, no how, no mc cain.

45. "The Elders"
include some of the republicans who tried to influence the Bush-Cheney administration on Iraq. We all remember the commission that the President promised to listen to, but instead ignored. Many of them, despite their friendship with Bush1, found his son obnoxious. More, they were among those who said they could not recognize Cheney any more.

McCain had a poor relationship with Bush, and a worse one with Cheney. But in his campaign for the republican nomination in '08, McCain went to any length to prove he was willing to humiliate himself to win. This didn't include kissing Cheney's behind directly, as he did Jerry Falwell a few years ago. Or nursing from him in public, as he did with President Bush. Instead, he took a less direct route, and ended up with John Bolton in a high-ranking, but behind-the-scenes position in his campaign.

McCain wanted to pick Lieberman or Ridge for VP. He was convinced by advisers that the right-wing would not support either on a ticket with him. He "picked" Palin, a person he really did not know, based upon Bolton and others advice. Time has shown why she was, at least in theory, a better choice for the Cheney/neoconservatives than for McCain.

The Elders were impressed by McCain's choice, in a largely negative way. Some had hoped for Lieberman, or Ridge, and Bush1 had wanted Mitt Romney. As Palin moved more into the religious right cult/wing of the republican party, the Elders group moved further from McCain. They began to concentrate more on individual Congressional elections, but the combination of Bush-Cheney and McCain-Palin has hurt almost every republican candidate this year.

Of course, when McCain had made noise about leaving the republican party a few years ago, then didn't, the Elders viewed him as weak and unreliable. McCain is furious that they aren't backing him, to the degree that he feels he is owed. His infamous temper tantrums have not earned him the respect or affection of those he needed. Too late now.

8. McCain Doesn't Have Anything to Work With
No money, talent, or dirt on Obama. McCain used up what little controversy he could find before the Conventions, and very foolishly. Then he generated tons more with the Palin pick.

The post about the BFEE walking away from McCain is very true. The real question is walking towards what? They will try to sabotage Obama the way they did Clinton so Jebbie can run in 4-8 years.

I'm willing to bet that by then, there won't be any GOP, and this byzantine planning will be for naught. And just maybe enough BushCo operatives will be in jail that there's nobody left to do the heavy lifting. And Poopy is hanging by an ever-shortening thread.

It's the end of an Error.

The Kalidi thing might have been it, but it wasn't even a blip.

Rush today is working on associations again/still--- (paraphrasing): ayers wrote a book with a red cover that he dedicated to sirhan sirhan and why did the kennedys endorse obama if his good friend ayers dedicated a book to sirhan sirhan and oh by the way did I mention that the cover of the book was bright red??

28. Khalidi was a big whoops -- McLiar gave him a $400K grant as head of the IRI
The International Republican Institute McLiar chaired gave Khalidi a grant of $400K for his work, so bringing up Obama's much more casual association with Khalidi just kind of didn't work out, don't you know.

And I haven't heard Rush ask all the Republicans who received campaign donations from the Annenbergs to return all that money since the Annenbergs have given Ayers millions in funding over the years. IF they are certain the association with Ayers is so contemptible, surely they would return those donations.

The way the Ayers story was allowed to flow around without network news reporters demanding that Republicans return all the campaign donations from the Annenbergs, is proof to me that the media conglomerates are in the hands of activist conservative owners.

Liberal media would have asked that question every time a Republican even mentioned Ayers. Have your Republican senators and congressional reps returned all the Annenberg contributions?

Any Republican airing of the Khalidi thing would also have met with stern questions--

Will you consult McLiar about why the International Republican Institute he chaired at the time gave nearly half a million dollars to Khalidi? If that association is as vile as you contend, why would McLiar have funded him?

SO, I do hope the Obama Administration works on breaking up the huge media conglomerates. THere is too much information management going on and we need a much freer press with much more diverse ownership.

not vote changing or recount demands! The public is ready for this to be over.
I'm thinking more along the lines of 'bold new change in strategy' for McCain like dropping Palin and appointing Joe the Plumber as his VP pick.
