How is your Church handling this election (Jesus or McCain)? |
|
I went to a nearby Baptist church the past two Wednesday evenings. I wasn't looking for anything other than Bible study. But, this past Wednesday, it was unreal. Although nobody came out and said to vote for McCain, the one leading the service tied the highjackers (if you believe the official story) to one of the candidates. That is, he couldn't understand how over 50% of the country is about to elect one of the candidates after what happened 7 hears ago.
He is not the pastor of the church. (The pastor happened to be out that night.) In addition to that, those in the room heard why one of the candidates was immoral. He brought up how awful it was that one of the candidates supported the poor. He then changed it to lazy (and therefore poor as a result) when he realized that it sounded awful to be pro-poor in a church. Then there was the evils of progressive taxation. One of the candidates supported murder.
By the end of his pitful presentation, all the problems with our country is because of Darwin and Obama (though he never said the word 'Obama'). My jaw was on the floor by the end of the evening.
Now, the previous week, when the pastor was there, the message was good. But, he did make an off comment to the people in attendance by saying that this nation is very close to having its women wearing burkas.
So, I started this thread to hear what other DUers of faith are hearing as the election approaches. Are your clergy "working it" so that its members cast the "moral" vote for McCain? You know, who would Jesus vote for?

1. I would've called that a-hole on it right on the spot |
|
I've always thought that Jesus was a Democrat and frequently called for "spreading the wealth around".

the worst of it. I also have started going to a Messianic Synagogue, where nothing political was mentioned Saturday. For the place I go on Sunday, you know the Sunday school teacher is (R) and hates taxes. The preacher is an (R) too. But, there, at the Church of Christ -- they're keeping it cool
But, this past Wednesday at the Baptist church was unreal.

12. I'm definitely going back to the Baptist church Wednesday after Obama |
|
wins on Tuesday (to silently gloat and grin through his pain).
If the politics continues, I'll go somewhere else on Wednesday night.

2. I'll have to go on Sunday and see if the minister is preaching against him. |
|
Maybe she's planning to come out for McCain or something. I kinda doubt it, though. Her attitudes are pretty much what you'd expect of any garden-variety openly lesbian Unitarian clergyperson.

11. There will be more hate spoken against Obama this Sunday than any single day in the last 2 years. |
|
And sadly, it will all come from those claiming to speak for God Almighty and His Son Jesus Christ. :(

The pastors at my family church in Renton (I go to school in Seattle) aren't the kind of people who would try and influence their parishoners to vote a certain way, not just because it's illegal.

14. You give me hope then. If this particular Baptist place is too political, then |
|
I'll find some other Baptist church on Wednesday night that preaches Jesus, not political leaders.

15. No political sermons at my church, unless you count "help the unfortunate". |

on edit: Given where the RW is these days, that might count as political. :eyes:

16. My rabbi did not come out and say it on Yom Kippur |
|
But the way he closed the service, it was obvious at least to me that his prayer for our country was a subtle prayer for Obama to get elected.
