Canvassed for Obama in Durham NC...with two of my children |
|
It started as a great day, with multiple positive reactions. Many people denouncing the Dole ad and agreeing to call friends and family to make sure they get out to vote as well. The last house, however, was disheartening. There were a few houses that were spread apart and not walkable. I drove and the kids were in clear view. I knocked on the door and a guy, perhaps in his 40's answered...and I gave him some early voting/obama literature. I asked for who I though would be his mother and an old man came out. He let me know that his wife had passed. We were discussing social security when an angry guy came out and lit the pamphlet on fire.
I thanked the older man for his time and went back to my car. The first question out of my daughters mouth was why he had burned the flyer. (because he KKKlassy)
No more canvassing with my children...in the country part of durham. There are some pretty desperate and angry republicans.

1. Sorry that happened to you. |
|
At least the other people at the house might still be thinking about who to vote for.

A confirmed "Palin voter"!:eyes:
The bad news is how many of his fellow whackos are out there...
The GOOD news is...apparently, they're in the minority here!:D
I look foward to the pyromaniac having to watch President Obama on tv next year!

6. On the whole things are better than the rest of the country... |

Everything has slowed down considerably but not in negative territory yet.
In terms of politics, you have your Krackpot Krazies Klansman when you are out of the city limits...but there is a tremendous Obama operation in Durham. He has three offices that I know of in Durham alone. I suspect it is because we had over 50% voter turnout in the primary and they want to run up Durham to make it happen. In addition to the field offices, there are 300+ member of Durham for Obama that are extremely active.
In the primary I volunteered when I could and on election day we were canvassing neighborhoods 3 & 4 times to get out the vote.
