CNN is reporting that Rep. Conyers looking into the aunt leak
Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Michigan fired off a letter asking Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to investigate whether someone leaked the information to the media in an effort to damage Obama.

"The AP reports that it 'could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved,' a very disturbing (suggestion) indeed," read the letter from Conyers, who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

"This leak is deplorable and I urge you to take immediate action to investigate and discipline those responsible."

The Department of Homeland Security had no immediate response to the letter.

When they mention the story on Headline News, they're leading with the aspect of the possibility of a leak from Bush or McCain.

2. So, the GOP Is Now Going To Attack Obama For Having A Relative Who Is An Illegal Immigrant?
Yup, great way to reach out to the Latino vote. You have to love the McCain camp, their briliant. Perhaps the Minute Men will now volunteer for McCain.

11. They have flat out given up on the latino vote. Heck they have probably given up on winning.
Most of what they are doing right now is merely an attempt to smear an Obama presidency in the eyes of the extreme right wing bigots.

3. The leak is the big story. Did they check all the McCain domestic staff?
If immigration is to be an issue, Who is McCain's gardener? Does he have seven gardeners? How many maids per mansion? Are they all legal?

4. Of course, it was Bushco. Who else had the info? But, Conyers should drop it. Obama has said he
did not know and laws should be obeyed. Done. Conyers' stirring the pot is only going to keep the it as news longer.

6. I'm torn about letting it go and continuing to dig
If Bush* or McCain* were involved in this leaking then they need to be held accountable. There is too much that the GOP get away with without being held accountable and that is why Dems have the reputation of being weak.

12. Oh please. They aren't held accountable for anything.
They outed a fucking covert CIA agent for God's sake. Nothing is beneath them and they will not be held accountable for this leak just as they have not been held account for all of the other crimes they've committed against our constitution and humanity.

All Conyers is doing is keeping a lame story alive.

5. His aunt is his father's half-sister,
you know, the father he met ONCE when he was 10. I have an AWOL father too out there somewhere, and I sure hope no one would expect me to pick out his half-sister from a crowd. How could he even have known of her existence? I'll bet he's not even on the Family Christmas newsletter list. She wouldn't even have known of his existence, I'll bet, if it weren't for his entire life-story and recent geneaology being available on the Internet to anyone who looks.

Unbelievable.

10. He mentioned her as his "dear aunt" in one of his books ........
So I guess he knows of her existence, but maybe not her status.

15. Ah, I didn't catch that
but I guess I need to remind all my relatives to bring their documentation with them this Christmas. Last year, Uncle Friedrich forgot his, and I couldn't sit next to him at dinner until we got the consulate on the phone. It was so awkward.

This isn't going to change the vote. Between now and Nov. 4 Barack would have to be caught with a dead woman or a live boy. Chill Baby Chill!

17. See - what I wonder is if the whole story was leaked?
What I mean is we are told that she lost her bid for amnesty. Usually there is an appeal process and usually you can stay while your appeal is being dealt with. And yes, that can take years.

And now the immigration people are suddenly close lipped about her status? I don't believe that they "lost track" of her b/c someone was able to tell the AP exactly where she was. If they knew that, and she was out of appeals, she'd have been deported.

Something stinks here.
