I have long since wondered why this tidbit never surfaced in the campaign. McPalin often laments how overburdened business are when the truth is they pay less in taxes than their custodial staff.

Most U.S. firms paid no taxes over 7-year span

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

When the taxman cometh, most corporations wave him on by, according to a government study released on Tuesday. About two-thirds of U.S. companies and foreign firms doing business in this country paid no federal income taxes from 1998 to 2005, according to a study by the Government Accountability Office. Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., called the report "a shocking indictment of the current tax system."

To be sure, many of the nonpayers were small or new companies that probably made no money. But the report said that about a quarter of large corporations - ones that had more than $250 million in assets or $50 million in gross receipts - paid no taxes. In 2005, for instance, 3,565 large U.S. companies and 998 large foreign-owned companies operating here did not pay any income taxes.

3. I heard Obama point that out in his speeches.
And I believe he corrected McHate in a debate on that topic.

But yes, I wish more of those myths had been shattered more boldly.

I was glad to see the unions step up in some cases and reel out those statistics.

4. I recall him saying a secretary pays a higher tax rate than the CEO.
I read about a corporation that required a moving van to deliver their tax return with loopholes galore and culminating in $0 taxes owed.

The disparity in the tax burden is outrageous. Republicans are downright geniuses in creating the impression that U.S. corporations are overburdened.
