Tuesday will be a repudiation of a notion that I'm somehow not good enough to be an American...
...Because I'm a 47 year old liberal man of color

Barack Obama will be the defacto standard bearer for an American. And guess what? He's another 47 year old liberal man of color.

It's not just a coincidence, it's a fact.

When I've traveled around the world, the first thing that people in other countries would identify me as is an AMERICAN. Not a black American, Afro-American, or as some motherfucker once screamed out of the window of a car in 1975, a "Nigger".

What is coming is a moment that will shatter the myth that America is somehow the bastion of White, Anglo-Saxon preeminence with a permanent multi-cultural sub-strata.

What is coming is the vindication that we are all Americans and equals, at least in the cultural sense of the word.

However in America, there are other vindications that are required. The fight must still continue:

For non-heterosexual Americans, we must vindicate their orientations and their love for their partners as the equal of heteros.

For women, we must vindicate the power that they are entitled for control over their own bodies and their equal worth as employees.

For non-Christians, we must vindicate that everyone's personal belief or non-belief is equal under law, as long as one belief does not impede the beliefs of others.

For the financially disadvantaged, we must reverse the deference to just the richest Americans and institute mechanisms that raise all boats instead of the just biggest, fanciest yachts.

We must vindicate peace and justice.

We must vindicate the rule of law.

We must vindicate the protection of our environment.

We must vindicate all Americans, not just any specific demographic.

In all places of our nation, we must vindicate Americans in small towns, big cities and everywhere else in between.

Once we do this, it'll be a clear direction to walk, to respect ourselves and as the most influential nation at this time and respect for everyone else on this planet.

I see beyond the fact that a person of color will obtain the highest office of the land. I see the potential for vindication of all Americans, our ideals and our sacred trusts. Apply the same standard for selecting Barack Obama as President of the United States for what must be accomplished:

Because, it's the Right Thing To Do.

1. Nothing I could say could possibly
top that. But, Tuesday must be an unequivocal REPUDIATION of all of the horrors inflicted on our country since 11/22/63, with the exception of a few transformative moments such as the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

20. Not only are you "good enough to be an American"
You are a great American who exemplifies the spirit it will require to remake America, to make it better, fairer, braver and more visionary, to undertake a new American Revolution, and this time to rebel peacefully but fiercely and unstintingly against those who would see the country banished back to the 19th Century, a revolution of the mind and of minds reaching out to minds around them and sharing truth among them. America needs to be taught not to tolerate - we should have been there 40 years ago, or 400 years ago - but to love. What human wealth, what rich energies in a nation alive to its diversity, and drawing meaningful strength and moral suasion - in the best sense of that concept - from that principle.

This is a touching, heart-tugging, magnificent post.

That I share citizenship with someone as intelligent, insightful, measured and thoughtful and good-hearted as you makes me proud to be an American, and I thank you.

21. Beautiful post! I too see Obama's ascension as vindication for all disenfranchised Americans.
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 01:55 AM by Blondiegrrl
As a white person and a heterosexual, I'm fortunate that I have not experienced a lot of the prejudice against many minority groups in this country. Even so, my life has been an uphill climb because I am a woman, I am economically disadvantaged (i.e. poor), and I am not comfortable with organized religion. All my life I've seen this country -- and to a lesser extent, its cities, towns and corporations -- run by wealthy, white, heterosexual Christian men, while anyone who didn't fit that mold was shut out in the cold.

I first got to know Obama when he spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. He moved me like no other politician had. For the first time, I began to feel hope that the people at the bottom of the ladder had a chance -- a REAL CHANCE -- of climbing to the top. He is our best hope to heal this nation and restore our country's dignity and respect on the world stage. I believe Obama has the makings of a great leader, and I feel so happy and proud to be witnessing history in the making.

The "isms" will not die if Mr. Obama is elected in office. The fight goes on. And for some of the Republicans who are resentful of Obama, things will be specifically bad. They are not going to stop attacking Mr. Obama, or people of color because he is President.

I think that now is the time to promote the beauty of difference. Being different is not a thing to fear. It adds to our beauty and uniqueness.

Mr. Obama will be a representative of what makes America unique, wonderful and great. We are not monolithic. We are a country that has different cultures, ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, beliefs and languages. We are an example of the entire world in one place.

Bless you for what you've said. It needs to be said especially if America gets this chance to change in the elections.

Most of them remember times when they couldnt use the same door, restroom, water fountain, as white people.

35. Yes we can, Yes we will..
BBC's Justin Webb had a great piece on the BBC news last Thursday. He is following the campaign and he noted the three defining moments for him (I have tried to find the link to share it, can't....).

1st- watching the deep love that McCain has for fellow veterans (I understand having been married to a U.S. Marine Veteran)
2nd- Hillary's momentous endorsement of Obama on the floor of the Convention. I agree.

3rd- and I believe most important- getting turned around at the Dems Conventions and witnessing the Secret Service taking care of Sasha and Malia. Webb went on to say Obama's swearing in won't be the most important defining event of this incredible journey and campaign, but the simple observation of two little girls of color running through the White House as their own- THAT is the defining moment!!!! So poetic, I cried uncontrollably at the vision and its implications....

as you state so eloquently...for no other reason than BECAUSE it IS the RIGHT thing to DO!

I remember being in government clases in high school and college and just being really excited and overwhelmed at what the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence required from US as citizens. We had to be informed and involved...the dumbing down of america has allowed the evil empire to take over in so many ways. We are at the brink of re-discovering what it really means to be a Participating American. And having a President who taught Constitutional Law, we will be sure to have quite an example to lead us back towards the ideals we once held so deeply important and crucial to Liberty.

thanks for ths OP...it is inspiring to hink of what lies ahead...even the work we have to do is exciting when you think about it!

44. Could not be said better
I am an Irish/German male, I don;t exactly want to be described as a color, but if I must, I guess "white" is what they would say, lol. I am not financially well to do (not exactly poor, but definitely middle class), I also am not a Christian, and by W's standards my beliefs should not even be classified as a religion.

I did not start out as an Obama supporter, I was a Hillary fan in the primaries. However, I have became a fan in the past few months. I already voted, waited 40 mins in line to cast my ballot for a great man, who will hopefully change the minds and hearts of those not only in this country, but around the world.

I will be very happy Tuesday (as long as the repubs can't cheat in too many states), however, I will be much much happier on January 20th, 2009.

Tuesday is a very important day, but it doesn't really get going until Inauguration Day.

72. I just watched 'To Kill a Mockingbird' for the first time today. WOW, what a movie,
I agree. Well said Mr. Scorpio.

I didn't get the meaning of the line 'Stand up, Miss Jean Louise. Your father is passing' until I saw the movie. The delivery of that line was awesome! It's a beautiful movie in several ways. It touched me deeply. I don't think I've read the book, I should.

I must admit I've had tinges of racism in me, not enough where I would be considered a racist, but a little. I feel this election, and now watching this movie, has helped to purge quite a bit of that racism out of me.

One part that moved me is Brock Peters' portrayal of the falsely accused Tom Robinson on the stand. The DVD has interviews of Peters and Gregory Peck talking about it. Peters talked about how he prepared for the scene.

Brock Peters: "My life as an African American or Black American has had a lot of horror, in terms of racism. You know, I've been kicked, beaten, I've seen the worst of it. I guess I've been fortunate in being able to step back from the brink of an anger that would engulf me and cause my life to go in a really downward spiral. The anger, the frustration, the isolation that one could experience and often did experience was an easy place for me to get to, to tap, to use in my performance."
http://notemptynow.com/pages/pages2/ToKillaMockingbird.html

Gregory Peck said he couldn't look Peters in the eyes during that scene, he would have gotten choked up.

“We spent two weeks that I call two weeks of tears--my veil of tears.”

I did not, sir. ... There wasn't a dry eye on set filming that scene… Robert Mulligan sat me down and asked me to prepare for the point where I burst into tears by only going to places in my mind where I remembered and experienced pain, and let me tell you the tears did come.”
http://thinkexist.com/quotes/brock_peters/

It's no wonder I was moved, those tears were real.

I can't help notice the similarity of the names Brock and Barack, Robinson and Obama both being falsely accused, Robinson chastised for feeling "sorry for a white woman" and Obama being called an "elitist", and Robinson and Obama being of high moral character.

...middle-aged, straight, white, Anglo-Saxon males who've been called loony & too sensitive & more all their lives, who won't compete on the Man's terms having long ago seen through how the coaches used the jocks in school, the ones whose oldest friends have revealed themselves as narcissists & bigots, the ones who've been assaulted over the length of their hair, been tear gassed, asked by teachers "Haven't you got any common sense?" told by red-faced, spittle-flying relatives to "Shut up!"...

I know there's room for us.

It's going to be one of the greatest pleasures of my life to help elect Barack Obama to his first term as President of the United States of America.

57. Well said MrScorpio!
Although I don't agree totally with Mr. Obama on many issues, I've been volunteering for his organization and I'll be proudly voting for him on Tuesday. I have had an unusual history as an American. This white, straight male grew up in the inner city (and was a white minority in the public schools I attended), will be shedding a few tears of joy on Election Night, reflecting upon what you just expressed in your terrific post. Yes, America will finally DO THE RIGHT THING! It's about time. Yes we fucking can, and we will!!!! Peace Brother!

59. I can think of only one other case of a member of an ethnic minority elected to the highest spot
in a democratic state, the former President of Peru was of Japanese ethnicity. So it's not just good for America, it will be something of a landmark for minorities worldwide.

110. Rare but it has happened elsewhere...
The 19th century British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli was an ethnic Jew (though a convert to Christianity) - and that certainly made someone a minority group member in Victorian England.

Although she isn't an elected official or politically powerful, the current Governor General of Canada is a black woman, Michaelle Jean, who was born in Haiti. Her predecessor Adrienne Clarkson was IIRC of partly Chinese origin.

However, it certainly isn't usual.

113. oh yeah, how could I have forgot Disraeli?
I wouldn't count the other one - that's an appointed position, and is neither the head of government or head of state. Somewhat akin to Condi Rice, and while still rare, not nearly so as a minority member elected to the top spot.

For the last 8 years I have had family, co-workers, and long time acquaintances feel personally emboldened to condemn my choice of faith, my interracial marriage, and my liberal viewpoints simply because the leaders of this country set the tone and emboldened millions to ignore the lines of decency. Starting Tuesday night, it will no longer be ok for them to do that.

Yes. I will feel vindicated too.

95. Democracy is something that has to be worked at continuously.
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 04:41 AM by olegramps
There never will be a utopian democratic society in which every person's rights are respected. It is something that has to be continuously striven for. There always will be pockets of abject ignorance and intolerance that will have to be combated by every generation.

One of the most important tools to combat those who are intent on pushing their agenda is the public educational system. That is exactly why it comes under the most scathing criticism by the conservative religious right wing. They have long sought to have their educational systems financed by tax revenues solely with the intent to completely destroying what they regard as a godless cesspool run by liberal brain-washers. Their push for vouchers under the guise of providing the disadvantaged with a better educational system is nothing more than a Trojan Horse. The classic case of the camel with his nose under the tent.

The strength of a democracy is seen in its shared values. Chief among them is tolerance. What far too many private religious schools teach is intolerance. Their product is a person who believes that they have a sole monopoly on truth and anyone who disagrees with them is not only wrong but condemned to hell for eternity. They are nothing more than a cancer that threatens the life blood a our democratic Republic. When Obama lists education as a primary concern, I pray that he is talking about the strengthening of our public educational system and not in anyway endorsing religious schools that are a principle source of intolerance and hatred.

I know a little something about what it feels like to be made out to be something less than human, being a gay man. Humans will come up with the darnedest things to divide and deride other human beings from their midst, when so much beauty and joy could be had by inclusion. It's past time to heal, and it's past time for all of us, collectively, to do the right thing.

Thank you for your beautiful words. Side by side, we'll keep walking toward Good and Light.

Eight years of soul destroying, election stealing, law breaking, civil rights trampling "leadership"
have reduced me to the most cynical being in my core.

We have a chance to regain our trust in our leaders and our country.

It IS the Right Thing To Do!

Thank you so much for the beautifully worded message.
