http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15174.htmlJohn McCain poked fun at his running mate, Barack Obama and his own campaign's dwindling assets in an appearance tonight on the opening sequence of Saturday Night Live.
McCain, along with Tina Fey playing running mate Sarah Palin, held a mock QVC auction selling commemorative campaign products as a response to Barack Obamas prime time infomercial.
"These final days have been the most essential," McCain said. "Barack Obama purchased air time on three networks. We, however, can only afford time on QVC.
"I would rather be on three major networks. But I'm a true maverick, a Republican without money.”
Wife Cindy McCain made a cameo showing off jewelry the Arizona Senator hawked as "McCain's fine gold," commemorating the campaign finance law her husband coauthored with Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold (D).
McCain chided Obama for turning down the Republicans offer to hold multiple townhall debates: "This has been a historic campaign, so why not remember it with our line of collectible products. Such as 10 commemorative plates celebrating the 10 town hall debates between Sen. Obama and myself. Oh look they’re blank," he said.
Fey made light of recent reports that Palin is a diva who has gone rogue by pulling away from McCain to urge viewers to buy "Palin in 2012" t-shirts.
"Just try to wait until after Tuesday to wear ‘em, ok," Fey said. "Cause I’m not going anywhere. And I’m not going back to Alaska."
McCain reappeared later in the show for the "Weekend Update" mock newscast, where he joked that he might unveil a new campaign strategy in the closing days.
"You know, a lot can happen in three days," he said. "And while I'm confident that we will emerge victorious, I'm also considering a few radical last-minute strategies.
"You know how people call me the maverick I thought Id try a strategy called 'the reverse maverick' that's where I do anything anybody tells me."
McCain said that he is also considering employing the "double maverick," the "Forrest Gump," and the "sad grandpa."
