I think this was the only time a modern US president was not asked to campaign at all during...

the fall campaign. Heck, I still think that McCain cancelled the first night of the GOP convention just so Bush and Cheney couldn't appear live (Bush had to console himself with a taped address the next night). But think of it:

1952: Harry Truman campaigned extensively for Adlai Stevenson.
1960: Ike campaigned in key states for Nixon
1968: Even LBJ at the height of the Vietnam War campaigned for Humphrey in NY, WVA, KY, TN, MO, and most famously an election eve rally of 50,000 people at the Astrodome in Houston.
1988: Reagan was utilized by Bush I
2000: Clinton made campaign stops for Gore and other Dems.
2008: I can't think of Bush being asked to do a thing during the GE for McCain.

This is a good commentary of how disliked the Bush administration is.

2.  Nixon wasn't the incumbent president--Ford was. I'm talking about

incumbent presidents campaigning when they were lame ducks.

Gore should distance himself from Clinton and then commented after the election how it hurt him?
