Ugly McCain Rally - Arlen Specter openly hopes for racism in the voting booth

McCain gets mean
Facing gloomy predictions for Tuesday, the candidate turns up the fear-mongering in Pennsylvania.

By Rebecca Traister

Nov. 2, 2008 | PERKASIE, Pa. -- It was hard to believe he was actually saying it, but the words were really coming out of his mouth. Arlen Specter's, that is, at an afternoon rally for John McCain in Perkasie, Pa., a small town north of Philadelphia. Specter, the senior senator from Pennsylvania, was talking about his "sense" that Election Day in his state was going to be a rude awakening for Democrats, despite weeks of polls showing Republicans lagging far behind in this former swing state. That's when he let loose with his reason for optimism:

There are a "couple of hidden factors" in this election, said Specter. "The first is that people answer pollsters one way, but in the secrecy of the ballot booth, vote the other way."

Yes. That is what he said, to a chorus of hopeful affirmation. Arlen Specter was openly -- in public, into a microphone -- crossing his fingers, and hoping for racism.

1. The only interesting thing about it is that he actually SAID it.

2. Arlen Specter is no friend to democracy or to America.
He is one of the biggest fakes in the Senate, Senator Magic Bullet.

3. And yet... While his racist friend Strom Thurmond publicly berated 30% of Americans..

...When he got to the secrecy of a bedroom, he was loving them.
So I guess that sword can cut both ways.

I call it the Thurmond Factor, where a racist tells his buddies "there's no way...", but when he leaves the machine after voting for a middle class tax cut and health care, he still tells his buddies "Hell yeah I voted fer McCain, I don't know how he lost".

4. Since a lot of polls are online these days, I don't think people "tell a pollster" much of anything.
Plus, if they're voting against Barack because he's black, they just find another way to defend it (inexperienced, terrorist, whatever). People have a really hard time saying they're supporting somebody they aren't (imagine telling a pollster you're voting for McCain).

5. I guess us early voters are immune to the Bradley effect.
The more early voters we get, the bigger Obama's lead in the polls grows, too.

If they would continue early voting for two more weeks, we could have an Obama landslide, and end racism in America!

Seriously, they HAVE to hope for racism, the way a losing Little League team prays for rain. It's the only hope of winning they have left.

What's sad is, they'll hope for whatever odious thing will let them win. If they thought meteor strikes or dead babies would improve their chances, they'd pray for it in a heartbeat.

7. Arlen Specter has been an asshole from way back...
...at least as far as his time on the Warren Commission, where he developed the "'magic bullet' theory" and thus played a key role in the cover-up of JFK's murder.

And we also can't forget his savaging of Anita Hill and its role in putting Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court.

What gets me is his reputation as a "moderate." I guess, for the Republicans, anything more mild than snake-handling, faith-healing, and proclaiming the imminent Second Coming qualifies as "moderate."
