...Barney is refusing to leave the WH cuz Malia and Sasha are taking up residency. Heard that straight from my Maggie, my Scottie, and she is a member of SU ~~ the Scottie Underground ~~ a place for progressive Scotties to hang out!

129. One of them has a dog allergy, so the choice is limited
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 05:12 PM by SoCalDem
Can't beat a poodle for brains & non-allergenic properties..

Standard poodles are quite athletic too :)

The Standard Poodle
is an active, intelligent and elegant dog. They are squarely built, well-proportioned, moving soundly and carrying themselves proudly.

Intelligent and eager to learn makes them popular in obedience trials. Steady, smart and loyal they will do anything an owner could wish for including obedience, shows, tricks, hunting and retrieving.

Poodles are happy good tempered dogs and make good family pets. Favored among asthma sufferers, they have a hypoallergenic, shed-free, woolly coat.

The Poodle makes an excellent family pet who will adapt to any situation and will try anything an owner wants. Poodles are very trainable and efficient to the owner who wants an obedient dog.

They are affectionate with their family, a little wary with strangers, but still accepting of them. They love to be around family and friends, and should not be left alone for long periods of time. They have had clownish haircuts in the past, in which the owners were allowed to carve any design they wanted into the fur.

Today the breed has the standard poodle cut, but if they aren't being shown they can simply be trimmed down. They are thought to be extremely intelligent and very obedient. They come in any solid color, and have very curly, thick fur. Poodles have natural drop ears and a puff of fur on top of the head. Spirited and lively, the Poodle is an energetic and happy breed.

11. There are lots of Rescue Assoc's for pure-breds and mixed doggies, too.
Just google for the kind of doggie you want...and there is a Rescue Service for that dog! Most services also include dogs that are a mix of the pure-bred. One of the cutest ones I ever saw? Oscar ~~ half Scottie and half Poodle!

I used to work with Scottie Rescue. They are a wonderful group. Some of the Scotties I have had in the past were rescued from the pound, I took the wee lass or lassie home and later placed him/her with someone in my area and kept one or two of them myself.

BTW: Too funny when you went the city park in my area...you immediately noticed it looked different...and then realized it was cuz there were so many Scottish Terriers there!

145. Cute AND friendly!
I had a golden retriever-malamute mix; she was the friendliest, happiest dog I ever owned.

Sadly, I had to give her up when financial circumstances forced me to move to an apartment. I was on the board of a local domestic violence shelter, though, and was able to "donate" her to the shelter.

She's still there after 6 years, and loves continuously having new people to share her happiness with!

112. a Labradoodle.
a hybrid of a Labrador and a poodle. Supposedly hypoallergenic like a poodle but with the temperament of the lab. Great unless you get the opposite. the shedding problem of the lab and the temperament of the poodle.

I have Lab mixes and I love them but the shedding is a problem.

38. I'm replying to my own post because SOMEONE in the Chicago area
really needs to adopt this dog. My personal testimony is that these are the loviest dogs in the world, loyal and cuddly. I have two mixed breed Pomeranians and they are both wonderful dogs. They can be taught easily not to bark excessively and they just want to be with you.

Please look at this dog if you have been wanting a cuddler. Let's find Mickey a home I just know he's a Democrat!

I do Pomeranian rescue in Kansas City and they're a wonderful breed, very loyal and sweet. Because of their size they aren't always good with small children unless they're prepared to handle the dog carefully and responsibly.

That guy in Chicago is adorable, I hope he finds a good (Democratic) home!

39. Problem: One of the girls has allergies
so they are limited in their choice of pooch to one that doesn't shed. I can't remember the breeds that were okay -- it's been a while since I saw this story.

If this weren't the case, heck -- my first choice is a wiener. I love mine. But labs and goldens are such great family dogs! Unfortunately, they shed too much.

I hope Michelle and Barack make good on the promise quickly -- they girls have put up with a lot the last two years and have earned their "reward."

The first one I ever saw was at the Redondo Beach Off-Leash Dog Park! He was just the cutest, nicest, funniest dog EVER! I love my Scotties and have had one in my life since I was in elementary school, but I can tell ya, I sure would be tempted to get a Labradoodle to add to my pack!

And...I saw a program the other day...Labradoodles are one type of dog that does not trigger allergic reations even in those with doggie allergies!

Can't you just picture the O-Fam with one of those pupsters smack right in the middle of their group???

115. This is my choice.
I have heard that poodles are not a good choice for children, sorry poodle people. I had one who was great with adults but not with small children. I now have a lab mix which I love but do not love the shedding hair everywhere.

But if you got a labradoodle you could get the best of both breeds. The temperament of the lab and the shedlessness of the poodle. And yes they are soooo cute.

83. It's not the shedding it's the proteins they release through skin and saliva
Poodles have the least amount of this protein, and there are a few other breeds that are known to be ok most of the time... but if you have allergies your best bet is a poodle, and failing that you're best off going with a poodle mixed with another less-allergenic breed.

We have a yorkiepoo for that reason... but he's 75% poodle, 25% yorkie hehe.

Took my oldest to get those little prongs-stuck-on-the-back tests when she was little to see what all she was allergic to...every animal with fur showed an allergic reaction---except cows. Great, we can have a pet cow. :eyes: And what does she do when she moves off to college..she adopts 2 kittens. And stocked up on allergy medicine.

72. Here's my WGS

I'll vouch for them! Ours is a female. She's practicably perfect in every way.

She's a rescue that we've had for three years. I have never had a more playful and protective dog in my life. Although she's never had any training in protecting us, there have been three times when she "alerted" on people. All three times her first instinct was to make sure where we were and then get between us and the perceived threat. She's never attacked anyone but she sure let them know they were not welcome anywhere near me and the people/other dogs I was with at the time.

95. I had a shepherd that would not allow the parents of an infant to take her with them when they left.

The dog sat and watched the baby the whole time they were there and when it was time to go she wouldn't let mom or dad pick up the baby, she had bonded. I had to take her to my bedroom.

I trust a shepherd's judgment of character completely. Every time I've second guessed it, I've been wrong.

133. I can believe it
I've seen it over and over again. I come from a large, dog-loving family and the best dogs we've ever had were GSs. They really are natural watch dogs and protectors. And they love kids. Ours loves to watch tv. Whenever she hears a baby cry on TV, she runs up to screen and then looks at us as if to say, "do something!".

Our GS's favorite doll, the Barney doll in the photo, is one that my little sister got her. One day we had a friend bring over her baby daughter. She put the baby down on our bed for her nap and we all went into the next room to socialize. A while later we heard laughing over the baby monitor and went to check on her. We found the baby sitting up, slapping at Barney, laughing and having the time of her life. Whenever the baby knocked Barney out of the baby's reach the GS moved it back within her grasp. They were playing. The baby was giggling and the GS's tail was going a mile a minute. And the only way Barney could have gotten on the bed in the first place was if our GS had put it there. When it came time for our friend and her baby to leave, our GS followed them out to the car and kept jumping in it. She didn't want her little friend to leave.

86. Rescues---
If anyone is thinking of getting a dog, check out the pure-breed rescues. Almost every single breed has at least one organization devoted to that breed's rescues. And many rescue agencies offer any and all breeds including the great-American mutt. Just support the rescues--and let's help put an end to irresponsible breeding in this country.

My brother and his wife, both Democrats, got a miniature dachshund puppy during the Kerry campaign. They found out the dog was purebred, so they had to pick a name for his papers. They named him Charles Kerry Edwards. It's Charlie for short. By the way, Charlie is voting for Obama Tuesday, unless they don't allow dogs in the polls. But anyway, his little heart is in the right place.

of puppies. He said he had some beagle/Labrador crosses, so that's what I decided on, thinking I'd get a medium sized, laid back dog. When I got there, he did have a litter of Jack Russel terriers, but I restrained myself because I just knew that Jack Russels are very high energy dogs.

It turned out that Guinness is a beagle/German Shepherd cross, with the activity level and barking habits of a very energetic beagle and the deep chest (gives his barks real volume!) of a German Shepherd!

Her sister (my daughter's dog) looks like a regular short haired lab. Had a vet tell me when they were puppies that no way were they related. My then puppy was the runt of the litter and about half the size of her sister, which was one of the dominants. Today at 11 years old they are the same size, but still look like different breeds.

144. Aren't they great?
I had two purebreds previously, actually found the first one, Rosie, at the Humane Society. Hadn't heard of them before. She was the sickest dog there and more than repaid my love and care for her. I was hooked big time. The second one, Mellow, was given up by a breeder who was in a bad accident and couldn't care for her. They have incredible personalities! I was watching a dog show once and they said Flat-Coats are one of the best kept secrets in the dog world. They have unbelievable personalities. Of course my Golden is truly 'golden' also. But I saw Zelda on Pet Finder, and I knew I had to have her. I know you will love sharing your home with him or her.

Large enough to withstand the roughhousing kids can do, but the most gentle dog ever bred.

I just got to thinking- Caribou Barbie carries Trig around exactly like Bush does with Barney. Completely uncaring as to safety and could care less if they fall to the ground. Anyone see the tape of Palin carrying Trig around trick or treating the other night. He was hanging from her arm upside down facing the hground. What a bitch she is using her (grand?)child as a prop.

126. Here is my pick...
From the Washington DC Humane Society (close to home for the Obama's!)...

Jewel is a 8-month-old Australian Shepherd/Retriever mix whose previous owner was having a baby and thought caring for her two dogs was too stressful. Jewel is a super sweet, affectionate pup who wants nothing more than to snuggle up next to you and be petted. She bonds quickly and loves people. She's still a young dog and can be a bit shy, so she will benefit from continued training and socialization in her new home. She gets along well with kids, cats and other dogs, making her an ideal family companion. She weighs around 35 pounds. Hurry in, a dog this sweet won't be here long!

130. Since the kids have allergies
a Labradoodle or a Goldendoodle would be great dogs.

139. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from a reputable breeder would be ideal in temperament and size.
Perhaps as "a breed" the overall most lovable small dog. They have, in general, a wonderful CALM temperament. Just like Barack. :-)

http://www.ckcsc.org/ckcsc/ckcsc_inc.nsf/Founded-1954/breedgeneral.html

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a delightfully affectionate, playful, intelligent little dog that repays his owner’s care and attention with an endearing devotion.

Cavaliers are not kennel dogs. Because of four hundred years of close contact with their owners and their development as lap dogs, they make wonderful companions. They are happy, outgoing, loving little dogs who want to love you and be loved, to run and play in a safe place, and to sleep in a soft bed - preferably your bed, but they’re willing to negotiate on that point! They get along well with children, cats, and other dogs.

Because young Cavalier puppies are so small, some breeders are reluctant to sell a puppy to a family with children under age five. Such families may find that an older puppy or grown dog may be more suitable. Cavalier puppies do not thrive when left all day without human companionship or the company of another animal. They are highly intelligent and require the same consistent and loving discipline as does a child.

Cavaliers are active and sporting little dogs that require regular exercise. They have an instinct to give chase to just about anything that moves, and should either be on a leash or in a fenced yard or they will surely come to grief under the wheels of a car. Because Cavaliers never become “street-wise,” some Cavalier breeders require a fenced yard as a prerequisite for Cavalier ownership.

While Cavaliers are clean, intelligent, and easy to groom and train, they do shed, occasionally chew things, and sometimes forget their manners by barking, making a puddle, and so on. In other words, they really are first and always dogs, in spite of their ethereal faces!
