'Obama, Japan' for 'Obama the Man'

Associated Press

November 2, 2008

OBAMA, JAPAN -- With only two days to go until the US presidential election, things are really heating up not only in the US but also in a Japanese port town that shares the same name as the Democratic presidential candidate.

Barack Obama may never have been to this town, 250 miles west of Tokyo, but Obama the town is a big fan of Obama the man.

Although they cannot vote for him, the whole city is cheering for the Democratic candidate across the Pacific Ocean, in their own way.

Some Obama residents formed the group "Obama for Obama" to support his candidacy.

They made Obama-dumplings, Obama-chopsticks, Obama T-shirts, and also an "Obama girls" hula group that made their debut in Hawaii earlier this year.

Now the men in this coastal city have been inspired by the "Obama girls" and decided to join forces to perform a hula dance on election day.

Leader of the newly formed "Obama boys" dance troop, Maeno Yasunori, said they had taken the step to show their support.

1. I used to live near there!
And in nearby Sabae is the eyeglasses manufacturer that makes Sarah Palin's frames, and some say, also Hillary Clinton's. When I used to ride the train back home from work trips to Nagoya, I would always know I was near home by the enormous eyeglass frames on the hill, like the "Hollywood" sign.

There's an interesting article on the two cities here: http://www.newyorker.com/talk/2008/10/20/081020ta_talk_goodyear
