Just volunteered to drive people to the polls on election day. |
|
I don't know if they'll be able to use me or not, but it's one of the few things that I CAN do.

4. I got the email from the main campaign that said "volunteer opportunities" |
|
and I clicked on it, it took me to the campaign website, asked me for my zip code. I entered it, and all that was offered in my area was phone banking for tomorrow. With my three year old and lack of cell minutes, that's a no go. So, I sent the organizer an email and told her what hours I'd be able to drive folks to and from on Tuesday. I'm hoping that I'll hear back either tonight or early tomorrow so I can make sure my tank is full etc.

We'll need all the help we can get. Today I attempted canvassing, and started off by myself for a couple hours until the hail and rain came down. I went back to the Dem HQ to dry out my data sheets, which were soaked, and ended up getting a partner. She was a really nice lady, but she did not know how canvassing for Obama worked, and wanted to just put the doorknob flyer on every house on the street, rather than knocking on doors, asking if the person was supporting Obama on Tuesday, and then circling the appropriate code. I finally had to give up .
She was a great lady, and had come to America from Viet Nam. She told me her village was bombed and only 3 families survived. They moved to the city and that was bomed, too. She was 'drafted' into the army in Viet Nam at 18, but refused to shoot anyone, so they sent her to a prison camp, and she was set for a firing squad in two days. Her dad had buried some gold, and he dug it up, bribed the prison guards and flew her to San Francisco with no contacts or anything. This was 1973. She says she hid for years because she didn't have a visa (just got her citizenship in 2002) and thought Americans were out to kill her since she was Vietnamese. I believe her story. Can you imagine? I had to cut her a break for all that, however, we ended up going back to headquarters without finishing off our packet.
I'm going back tomorrow. Gov. Gregoire and Sen. Patty Murray will be at the Dem Headquarters. I can't miss that, or an opportunity to knock on as many doors as I possibly can until Tuesday night.

6. Wow, that's a crazy story! But you know what they say, the truth is |
|
always stranger than fiction!!!!
I wanted so badly to go out to Indiana to canvas there this weekend, but nobody will watch all four of my kids for me! It's so frustrating!

8. It was a crazy story... |
|
but I believed her, oddly enough.
Raising your kids, and letting them see your passion for this election is doing more good than you can even imagine. I thought I had ruined my daughter because of my passion for politics, and my anger at the stolen 2000 election, but in fact, my daughter has grown up to be an outstanding human being who cares. She's also very passionate about politics, even though as a child she loved to play devil's advocate just to get me going, LOL.

7. If you live in or close to an urban area |
|
you can drive around, starting about 4pm, and ask people at bus stations if they'd like a ride home in order to get to the polls.
