Every call I've gotten from McCain is a recording, every call from Obama is a live person |
|
I think that speaks volumes.Nobody cares enough about McCain to canvass for him? Sad old grandpa. I think we should chip in and buy him a rocking chair as a consolation prize.

3. A word about those live people calling you... it's not a nice job. |
|
You're given a fistful of sheets with dozens of names. Supposedly these names are all Obama supporters or those leaning strongly toward Obama. You're given a suggested script with important points clearly indicated. After 5 minutes of prepping, you start calling.
Roughly 80% of the numbers will never pick up. About 25% of those are simply wrong numbers. Half of those who pick up will be ugly, "I told you people 100 times to never call me again." Some simply hang up. Others are polite.
So, less than 10% of those numbers called will find an Obama supporter on the other end of the line. They tend to be nice and reassuring: "Yes, I am definitely voting. I'll try to vote early, but it might be on the fourth. But, no I cannot volunteer."
Three hours of this sucks the energy right out your ears.
What does it say when McCain cannot inspire anyone to do this work for him?

6. I know and I admire the tenacity |
|
I haven't been able to phone bank or or door-to-door since I started getting panic attacks many years ago. The last time I did so was for Bill Clinton and it was rough then but probably not as evil as this campaign. The level of Xanax it would require for me to do that is an amount that would make me incoherent so I restrict my campaigning to non-public contact. I admire the hell out of people who have more guts than I do and can do that stuff.

4. The Dem Headquarters was hopping today. |
|
I was pleasantly surprised. When I went in at 11:30, there were only a couple people there. I went out to canvass for a couple hours, got hailed out, and returned to find it hopping with people on the phones, with more coming in and out to get their canvassing packets. It was beautiful for a Sunday! In a BLUE state (people will come out more in Red States, because the stakes are higher, but in a dark blue state? This is amazing!) Especially since I've been hearing reporsts that many of the McCain offices close over the weekends in battleground states.

7. I've had both from Obama campaign. |

Recording from Michelle encouraging volunteerism.
Best yet was today Obama campaign called and specified exactly where my polling place is. (I wasn't home but it is captured on my answering machine.) Very thoughtful.
