in other words, fewer people from across the political spectrum that we need to convince to vote for our guy?

reason #2: a lot of "regular undecided voters" didn't actually pay much attention to politics during the primary season. this could be for many of them the first they've ever heard of rev. wright. remember a few years back during the summer of reruns when NBC ran the promo with the tag: "if you haven't seen it yet, it's new to you"?

Look, saying "most people weren't paying attention back then" makes sense when we're talking about inside baseball stuff like Obama's sorta-backtrack on public financing. It does not really apply to the biggest media-frenzy issue of the year (Palin aside).
