Though Jersey Ain't Too Much At Risk, I Did Convert Another Voter To Our Side Yesterday. Know How?
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 10:21 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Well first off, it's my new girlfriends mother. Very standard kinda middle of the road uninformed voter. She wasn't really against Obama, but said she was voting for McCain. She said a few typical uninformed things about Obama such as 'what about this socialism' argument and 'what's this about him being at the same meeting and the paper is holding the evidence?' argument. She wasn't steadfast in stating them, she was actually genuinely curious and just didn't have the facts (cause the media sucks). I was easily able to convince her that they were mere smears and not to believe everything she hears. But converting her completely came from one additional step.

See, she was being sucked in a bit by all the talk about Obama raising taxes. I laughed and explained to her how wrong that was and how misled she has been. But then I said "Know what? Come here. Facts matter, not talk. So I wanna show you something on the computer really quick". I googled the Obama/McCain tax calculator and told her to sit down and punch in all her information. I swear to you that the look on her face when realizing the reality of Obama's tax plan vs McCains, was just hilarious. Her jaw dropped and I could see the shock and awareness in her eyes. She questioned a bit as to how it could be real and I assured her it was. I showed her other sites with it and she was convinced it was legitimate.

I could see the gears in her head turning as she was becoming more and more aware as to how much everything she was hearing was bullshit. She even decided to punch in other random numbers into the calculator and couldn't believe how each time Obama won. She is now FIRMLY voting for Obama.

The only thing this entire campaign season I'm just a little disappointed in, is that the tax calculator hasn't been given NEARLY enough visibility. I wish there were signs, emails, commercials and exposure by the campaign everywhere directing people to the simple facts of the tax plans. I could see it with my own eyes yesterday. All she did was have to plug in the numbers and see for herself, and a whole new world opened for her. Even though it's jersey and pretty damn safe for Obama, I still feel good each time I'm able to convince yet another voter to vote for Obama.

48 hours to go!

2. Everyone counts. They talk to people, hence word can spread unlikely distances.
Ya never can tell ahead of time.

3. Yes, I agree that the tax calculator is pretty good.
I also have a quarter page handout showing the graph for people who don't want to go online and use the calculator

4. I agree... I e-mailed them the tax calculator idea in August,
and pointed them to this guy's work: http://obamataxcut.com. I included a poll showing a large majority were convinced that Obama was going to raise their taxes and McCain was going to lower them. I said they needed their own calculator app and they need to put it everywhere.

Anyone ever wondering whether or not it is futile to write the campaign: Someone does read those e-mails.
