Canvassing today an 80+ year old man made my eyes well up.
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 10:35 PM by progressoid
So I rang the doorbell of a small, well kept home. My canvassing list said an 83 year old Democrat with an absentee ballot lived there. When a small elderly man came to the door, I started my spiel. I introduced myself and asked for "Greta". He explained that she was in bed with the flu, then he slipped out the door onto the front stoop with me.

After a little minor political talk, a funny thing happened. He came close to me to read the sticker on my shirt which simply said I VOTED FOR CHANGE. No big deal I thought. But after a moment, he put out his hand and said, "thanks for what you are doing."

"My pleasure", I said. But apparently a hand shake wasn't enough, so he gives me a hug. The guy couldn't have been more than 90 pounds but managed to give me quite a hug. You gotta understand that's quite a thing for these stoic midwestern German Americans to do.

Then he thanks me again and I go on my way. It didn't hit me until later what a great moment that was.

Still kinda gets me just typing this.

We damn well better win on Tuesday!

ETA: She mailed in her ballot for Obama!

6. I was making phone calls for Obama in Denver yesterday.
Three people - all young (I knew their ages from the phone sheet) thanked me for what I was doing.
