Election 08 is shaping up to be what 68 should have been
In anticipation, I haven't shaved in two weeks. Let my hair grow unkempt.
However, I draw the line at the bathing thing. I MUST shower! So much
for the unwashed masses. Ban me if you must.

:P

25. My brother is a current hippie. Has the long hair still and everything.
We joke that he was born too late, in 1972.

2. hehe.
It is my understanding that the 1968 election resulted in a sharp split between the factions of the Democratic party and they never recovered from it. Just maybe this year, the Democratic party will
reunify.

4. Had RFK lived
The celebration would be alive today. Barack renews that.

27. Actually, it was somewhat worse than that...
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 05:02 AM by regnaD kciN
1968 did indeed expose such a split, and, in 1972, those factions did battle with the progressives coming out on top in the nominating process but the centrists taking over after McGovern's defeat and purging the progressives (in the name of "party unity") and turning the Democrats into the "safe" party that was the forerunner of the DLCers and Liebermans of recent times. After 1972, the Standard Operational Procedure for the Democratic Party was to present itself as merely "not quite as conservative as the Republicans, but still nowhere near -- gasp! -- liberal." It was that sort of scared-bunny leadership that really enabled the rise of Reagan and the Bushes because, let's face it, when one party is describes liberalism as evil, and the other acts as if liberalism is shameful, should it be surprising that the voting public will decide that conservatism is the only reasonable choice?

:grr:

"This old, gray beard
It ain't what it was in '68".

Damn, those 40 years whizzed right on by!

9. Not true. The old gray beard is every bit as bushy, but
the pony tail is a bit thin.

The hair, though, is negotiable. Luckily, MPB doesn't run in my family.

Keep the Faith!!!

10. Did you realize
that there were poll taxes until 44 years ago? Heard it on Rachel. I do seem to remember my dad talking about poll taxes when I was a kid.

11. I'm well aware
I remember Grandma worrying about how to come up with
the $$ to pay said poll tax. White folk, north Alabama
circa 1960. Yeah, I know all too well.

15. Well
I was already in grade school, had been to the state fair and got a can of gold water, AND had my heart torn out on November 22, 1963. It just seems surreal to have lived during that and now be on the eve of something so momentous and glorious.

18. I'm with you
We've waited all these years. Seeing our dreams dashed by a nut
with a gun. Dashed by a slick actor turned politician. Dashed by
a governor from Arkansas whom we thought was one of us. Killed by
an idiot son. Finally, one of US will inhabit the WH. Finally.

Was the 40-year struggle worth it? You're goddammed right it was!

19. whoa! I hadn't made that connection. thanks for that... it made my evening.
I worked for RFK in OR and CA in '68. Thankfully, I had already flown back to Portland the night
he was killed, but it left an indelible mark on my soul ... btw.. Obama had me with the Kennedy
family endorsements.

21. And when I first realized it, I was so shaken, I literally became ill....
... the surreality of it all is simply unbelieveable. Sometimes, all of this that his happening around us it too unbelievable to be true.

And yet it is .... I have the pinch-bruises all over my arms to prove it.

23. Yes. The intensity of this moment is unbelievable ...
... yet I Believe!!!! ... I believe that love is stronger than hatred, hope stronger than despair.

This election continues to blow my mind at every turn ... Hell, I started out with Kucinich, then
on to Edwards (arrgghh) ... then somehow it all came into focus as I gave Obama another look-see.

That's when the Kennedy clan endorsements kicked in, and it all "fit" somehow ... and I realized
how Obama is kind of an RFK and an MLK wrapped into one ... like a two-fer.

17. I get your drift. worked for RFK in OR and Ca before he was murdered.
this IS the kind of GE rout that WOULD have happened back then (had RFK not been taken out), with a candidate
who's smart, who electrifies, who leads with a clear vision for a truly better America and a better world.

26. Wow. That is really cool that you worked for RFK.
I really look back at him and am devastated by his loss for the American people. I liked him even more than his brother. Of course, I was not even born during this time, not until 1975 but I really look up to RFK.

29. It is not enough ...
"It is not enough to understand, or to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity,
by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task." ~Robt. F. Kennedy

Bobby committed both his mind and his body to the task, and 40 years later it all comes around.

This election is truly surreal for me, and I suspect for many others who remember, who resonated THEN with that
same vibration of hope that Obama exudes NOW.

Call me a loony, but I have a hunch that this moment in history is somehow related to what MLK saw on the mountaintop.
