PPP Montana Poll: Obama 48, Mccain 47, Paul 4
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 03:20 AM by hnmnf
t looks like the race for President in Montana is a complete tossup. What's less clear is that it can be attributed to Ron Paul's spot on the ballot in the state.

Paul is actually pulling equally from Democrats and Republicans- getting 2% of each of their votes- while polling at 9% with independents.

Obama has the slightest of leads based on his standing with two key groups: independents and voters under 30. With the former he has a 48-40 advantage. With the latter he is up 54-41.

Like in many states, the contest in Montana is going to come down to election day turnout. Among those who say they have already cast their ballots in the state, Barack Obama has built up a 61-35 lead. Among those planning to vote on Tuesday John McCain has a 53-40 advantage. The extent to which those folks follow through is likely to be the deciding factor in who takes the state

3. Winning a hard core red state like Montana will be sweet
I'm sure the McKKKain never even expected it to be in play.

4. Its always good to be the one ahead in early and behind in regular voting
The early voting is already in the bag. We already have that lead, and early voting will probably account for about a third of all votes case in Montana. McCain will win election day voting, but if his GOTV is bad, then it wont make up for it. I like the position we're in.

6. Oh Please oh please!!!! The Big Sky state just has to be BLUE!
The rural people are just shooting themselves in the feet if they vote McCain. the Tribune had an article about rural voters voting against their interests.

9. Anyone know is Barr on the ballot as well?
That would sap more of McNasty's vote.

10. I believe so
An ABC site from Montana has a September story about the ballot that says that Nader, Paul, and Barr all filed the appropriate papers to be put on the Montana ballot. Let's hope Paul and Barr can do their part to siphon away Republican votes there.

11. Thanks, I was thinking he was as well
I think Obama has an outside chance at Montana, but I'd put it at 30%. The conservatives would really have to split between Paul, Barr and McNasty for Obama to pull it off.
