1. I've done that a few times... |
|
Typically we were instructed not to try to influence any voters while we were driving them. Usually, the people who called Dem headquarters for rides were already planning on supporting the Democratic candidate/s anyways.

2. My guess would be that if you went through the campaign they are already Obama supporters. |
|
If not through the campaign you probably should not be twisting anyone's arm since you are the one who is driving them to the poll.

I thought I might say some of these:
"Personally, the idea of having Sarah Palin one heartbeat away from the presidency scares the daylights out of me."
"I think Obama's got a much better plan for the economy. He's going to cut taxes for people like you and me, but McCain wants to cut taxes only for the rich."
"Are you better off today then you were 8 years ago under Clinton?"

It's possible that there may be legal issues with you offering rides to the polls and then trying to influence their vote. I don't know that there are issues but you may want to get some legal advice.
Who is setting up the rides? If you're doing this for the Obama campaign then I'd assume that these are people who've already stated their support for Obama.
In any case, thank you for what you're doing.

If they're half-competent, your local party has already identified whether every single voter in your district is pro-Obama or pro-McCain (and has a file of their responses to internal polling questions dating back to the 1980s). Anyone who they're driving to the polls is at least going to be inclined to vote Obama.
Finally, there are very few undecided voters left. At this stage, your attempts to convince people will probably come off as more irritating than convincing. The best way that you can support Obama is to be courteous, friendly, and respectful. Above all, do no harm, you know?
Of course, if someone asks, by all means give them the talk (and remain pro-Obama; don't say a word about McCain unless you can't avoid it), but that doesn't usually happen.
