NYT: McCain "obsessed" with any poll showing the race tightening

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/us/politics/03mccain.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

<snip>

His aides say he is relieved that the race is almost over and for the most part out of his hands. He is also buoyed — and obsessed, his staff says — with polls that show the race tightening in some battleground states and allow him hope that he might still have a shot.

...

By the middle of the day, Mr. McCain likes to have news of the latest tracking polls. “We all kind of know when Rasmussen comes out, and Zogby,” Ms. Wallace said. “So we all watch for it.”

4. Honestly, I can't blame the guy.
What are McCain's options here? It's either delude yourself into believing whatever outlier poll you can find or flat out give up on the election. And really - option #2 isn't an option at all, not when you've got downballot races depending on you to at least make it something of a race and millions of people having already given you money.

5. Wait a minute -Arizona John said his internal polls are showing a dead-heat.

6. What's left for him to do?
He's got nothing else to hang on to.

I'm obsessed with the polls, too. It's pathetic, I know, but until this is a done deal I can't help but be nervous.

8. So much for the infernal "internals" his lackeys are always braying about.
If McCain is hanging unto every new poll that is out he truly has no clue as to what his situation is nationally or in any of the battleground states.
He should not be wasting any more time in PA.

He should be hitting all of the Bush states hard and he should have dropped all ads in the last week and and thrown the money into GOTV efforts in the battleground states and the states where Republican Senate and House seats could still be saved.

He would still likely lose but he might stave off a big landslide which takes down all the vulnerable down ticket Republican candidates.

The Republicans will have a right to be pissed at McCain for selecting Sarah Palin and then conducting his campaign in a way that almost guaranteed the loss of large numbers of Senate and House seats.
