When Was The Last Presidential Landslide, Democratic Landslide
Anyone know the history here?

When was the last presidential landslide? Regan 1980?

When was the last presidential landslide for a Democrat?

2. 1984 was one of the biggest landslides in history.
As for a Democrat, no Democrat has won over 50 percent of the vote since 1964. I imagine the last landslide was FDR.

23. I remember being 11 years old and hearing them say that word...
... and thinking how funny it was.

"Was there really land that had moved?" I thought to myself.

9. Still that looks even redder than it was.
Wasn't it only 44 states, not 49?

10. No. Reagan won every state but MN in '84. You're thinking of 1980.

4. LBJ
in 1964. Clinton won by a pretty big margin in 1996 but I wouldn't call it a landslide.

5. LBJ '64 was the last Demo landslide....
...with enough support in Congress to pass Great Society legislation, etc.

Of course, Vietnam undid that legacy, and then the toxic politics of the '68 Republicans -- which we're still living with -- undid any gains even further...

It was the mother of all landslides.

61% popular vote. 486 Electoral votes.

7. 1964 for Lyndon Johnson 61-38 over Goldwater for dems
I guess Bill Clinton in '96 and '92 was an electoral landslide of sorts but not really a popular vote landslide either year (I consider a landslide winning popular vote by over 10-points)

11. 1992 and 1996 were very strong electoral vote victories
But not majority of votes and certainly 1996 was not a sweeping victory in terms of senate and house.

In terms of a solid overturning of the previous control (and counting the start of the trend in 2006), we haven't seen that in favor of Dems since 1932. The Republicans had something like this under Reagan and it persisted more or less until now.

Polarity shifts are rare.

14. I think this is going to be a Roosevelt (FDR) landslide.
I'm projecting an Obama win in 31 states. I think FDR's record was 32 states maybe 35. I'll have to look it up to be sure.

20. Not necessarily
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 11:34 AM by VADem11
LBJ won the most amount of the popular vote in history. Reagan carried 49 states and FDR carried 46 out of 48. Technically, Reagan won the most electoral votes of any candidate in history.

24. In terms of popular vote percentages Reagan is not #1: LBJ, FDR, Nixon, Harding all won
bigger popular vote victory than Reagan.

27. The last landslide was in 1996
The Clinton-Dole election. Even though it was a three way race and Clinton did not get over 50%. The lead he had was a blowout.

31. a landslide is usually considered when the popular vote winner wins by 10 points or more
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 12:32 PM by WI_DEM
and Clinton got won by just under 9-points in 1996. Electorally it was a landslide, but not as huge as Eisenhower in '52/'56, LBJ in '64, Nixon in '72,Reagan in '84, Bush I in '88.
