Nigeria: U.S. Election - When Tomorrow Comes

They are elated by the America whose courts and activists so endearingly broke the barriers of discrimination and unjust laws and showed the world how much better it is to have a society based on solid institutions which uphold the rule of law. This positive view of the United States, is a far cry from the insular world inhabited by an unfortunate swath, best represented in recent times by the incumbent President, George W. Bush. For those outside the U.S., it is the concept of the positive America which has kindled so much interest in the elections.

It is a clear testimony to the enduring resilience of America's (admittedly imperfect) democracy, that a candidate outside of the main establishment, best captured in the description of White Anglo Saxon Protestant (WASP), should have come this far. Barak Obama's candidacy is an excellent tribute to the possibilities that exist or should exist in a functioning democracy. Whatever happens tomorrow, this is an edifying time for America's democracy; and the country as well as its fine, tested institutions should be applauded for it. There is, to state the obvious, quite a lot to be learnt from the American success story.
