I wish there were a way to impose a special tax on people who make below median salaries and yet are voting for McCain because they don't want to have their wealth redistributed. I mean, they're already expecting it, they're not going to vote for Obama in 2012 - let's take their wealth and use it to fix bridges or something.

I can't believe people in this country still can't get it in their heads that we're talking about a 3% increase in the top marginal tax rate; basically a tick up on anything over $250k. Even at that, people get revenue and taxable income mixed up. When this tax really kicks in, you're talking about a million dollars in reportable yearly income, and no security guard may make that in their entire lives.

I's code for taking the hard earned wages of working people, and handing it out to those on welfare who "don't want to work".

It's usually centered around a racial theme, and decades ago the supply siders used the old "black guy in a Cadillac" to personify the image of someone who is on the receiving end of "redistribution", and rally the middle class around their cause.

Alternately, they use the welfare mother who keeps having kids to "get a bigger check".

Here in Australia, which is a borderline socialist country, the newscasters and people on the street are BAFFLED by this American resistance to wealth redistribution. The comment I keep hearing is "why is it usually the people who can't pay their mortgages and are practically out on the streets themselves who are complaining about wealth redistribution??"

It's so clear to the whole world that these folks have no idea what they are talking about, but when you look at it from the racial component, it makes all the sense in the world. These "Barstool Repubs" as you call them have convinced themselves that "socialism" means taking money from the mouths of "hard-working" whites and putting it in the hands of shiftless, lazy blacks. And what's truly fascinating about this argument is 1) the U.S. has already been redistributing wealth through income taxes for about 80 years and 2) Obama ain't no socialist.
