How can John McCain (just now on MSNBC) say nuclear power is totally safe
when we have this in the news_

DENVER (AP) — A fire caused $1 million worth of damage at an unmanned underground nuclear launch site last spring, but the Air Force didn't find out about it until five days later, an Air Force official said Thursday.

The May 23 fire burned itself out after an hour or two, and multiple safety systems prevented any threat of an accidental launch of the Minuteman III missile, Maj. Laurie Arellano said. She said she was not allowed to say whether the missile was armed with a nuclear warhead at the time of the fire.

Arellano said the Air Force didn't know a fire had occurred until May 28, when a repair crew went to the launch site — about 40 miles east of Cheyenne, Wyo., and 100 miles northeast of Denver — because a trouble signal indicated a wiring problem.

5. Acceptable risk ... nothing is "Safe" just varying degrees of "unsafe." Even wind mills have ....
accidents. Electricity isn't "safe," but living without it would be more "unsafe."

7. Because he's an idtiot.... and there they go again with their sucky rally music...
"Here I go again on my own....."

It's a good song, but it's all wrong for a rally.

"I know what it means, to walk along the lonely street of dreams."

Goodness.

8. Simple question for the pro-nuke crowd: how much fuel is available to power
nuke plants in years based on usage levels from 2000?

Get back to me with the answer (hint: it ain't as long as most people imagine).

10. nuclear power
is not safe and energy produced will be too expensive. The price to build a reactor today is close to $13 billion. Wind would be much cheaper..

12. You are conflating unrelated things - nuclear warheads on missiles with nuclear power
totally unrelated.

Nuclear power is indeed quite safe and we get far less power from it by % than any other member of the G8. Indeed we would release LESS radioactive material into the environment if we swapped coal plants for nukes and this is in addition to the reduction in greenhouse gases. The Navy has been operating nuclear ships since the 1950's with no known nuclear accidents. The Russians had ONE nuclear accident in their navy but their reactor designs are far less safe than our own. Likewise at Chernobyl -their reactors are far less safely designed than ours. Even then they had to deliberately do something stupid to cause an accident.

Even at Chernobyl, only 50 have died from the radiation thus far. In the US there was an early experimental reactor in the late 50's that killed 5 but other than that there have not been any radiation related deaths.

By comparison, dam failures have killed over 1000 Americans in the last 130 years.

As the Supreme Court famously once said "safe is not the same as risk free".

All technologies have inherent risks and rewards. All technologies have unintended consequences as well. Nuclear needs to be a bigger part of our energy mix but it needs to be done as safely as we know how.
