I am also considered white but never saw myself as being merely such. :shrug:

I mean, I know my skin tone is pale and my ethnic heritage is mostly European with some American Indian thrown in. Unsure if there is anything else or not. But I always identified more with my mother who looked American Indian than I ever did with my father, and I never really identified with the people I grew up with, even most of my siblings. I never felt like I belonged in my time or space. I don't mean that I thought I was a member of any other Ethnic group either. I just never felt like I belonged to any group other than the one I created for myself. Okay, you can call out the guys with the butterfly nets now. I am ready to go. :crazy:

In my defense. I had a professor that said there was no such thing as an unique person, everyone was the same. At the end of a semester with me in his class, he said during the last session that he had to admit that he had been wrong. After knowing me for those few months he had to admit that there was such a thing as an unique individual and I was one. I did not fit in with any category that had been sit up for identification and clarification. He also had to admit that it was a good thing to be unique and even enviable for him. I believe there are many unique people out there that refuse to go with the flow and fit into the mold that society has made for us. We are not abnormal or anti-social, we are just unique and celebrate our uniqueness. We don't mind when people thing we are a little strange or weird. In fact we celebrate that also. :rofl:

As a professor, I focus a lot on the first question. I think THE KEY to moving this country in a progressive direction in the long-term is improved education. That means more funding for public schools and getting as high a percentage of people as possible to go to college.

I don't think education alone will knock this mentality of the midregion of Pennsylvania down. When I listen to even the educated people of Kentucky and Mississippi disregard Democrats as red liberals, I think something cultural is being overlooked.


Public schools would be welcome but these people believe Democrats are godless (some are), hate the Southern way of life (haven't forgotten the Confederacy...), and don't do life affirming things like hunt, fish, and work with our hands (I'm making that up). They really have no idea who we are because they've believed the smear on Democrats for generations.

Howard Dean's comment about the pickup trucks with the gun racks not withstanding, we need a paradigm shift for these Southerners.

Not that I am knocking on all southern whites and I know there are some progressive southern whites here on DU, but in the south white voters vote 70-80% for the GOP and that skews the national polls. Outside the south we only go moderately for the GOP. For example, in 2004 whites in Oregon went 50/50 for Bush/Kerry. In Alabama it was 80/19. Michigan was 54/44, Mississippi was 85/14. So outside the south whites are fairly evenly split or only mildly GOP. Its a fun game. Pick a state and type in the words 'cnn exit poll (state name) 2004' and scroll down to 'vote by race'.

Ohio 56/44, NH 49/50

vs.

Oklahoma 71/29, Georgia 76/23

You get the idea. Again, not knocking all southern whites just saying that due to racial tensions alot of the GOP support among whites is tied to the south. Outside the south whites are either neutral or go GOP by slight margins.

I had an African American friend from college visit me way back in the mid-1990's. We were both about 19 or 20. We walked down a walking trail in my rich suburban white town and got major stares and whispers...in 1996! I was disgusted and it opened my mind up to the racism that exists. My friend was used to it, unfortunately, but it surprised me. At least Obama is doing better among white voters then Kerry did. And if he wins, he will be everyone's president and if people watch him govern and like him, it will change many people's minds. I am hopeful. Ignorance is sometimes fear of the unknown. I was never afraid to make friends with different races but some are as they have only known life a certain way, like in West Virgina and parts of Ohio and PA. They may eventually come around.

And it IS true that dems always lose this demographic, isn't it? It's pretty evenly split among us white women, so that's fairly positive. But gee, you white guys need to get to work. :)

With all the pundits talking about the "black vote" I don't see any reason that the "white vote" can't be sliced and diced a little bit. We white democrats ARE kind of annoyed that so many of our fellow honkies (I used that word for a wee bit of humor) just blindly vote republican, aren't we? We DO wish they'd see the light, right?

I am really hopeful that THIS time will be different. We may not end up with a majority of the white vote, but we'll do much better this time than ever before. And that is surely something to rejoice. Not only that, but I firmly believe we'll have a reverse Bradley effect this time around. Being from the South originally, I know that there are probably many white voters there who won't admit publically that they voted for a democrat, much less a black man. But when they get in that voting booth, they'll vote their conscience - and they'll keep it to themselves until they feel they can proudly tell their kids that they cast their first vote for a democrat, a black man, in this historic election.

In the meantime, I do enjoy poking those republican snakes with a stick.
