Obama's Grandmother's Absentee Ballot will be Counted by State of Hawaii
November 03, 2008 8:21 PM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley, Rigel Anderson and Arnab Datta Report: While Sen. Barack Obama's late grandmother Madelyn Dunham will not live to see the outcome of this historic election, her 2008 vote will count.

Hawaii Chief Elections Officer Kevin Cronin told ABC News this evening that the absentee ballot cast by Dunham before she passed away will count.Cronin said Dunham's absentee ballot was received on October 27 and found to meet the requirements of a valid absentee ballot and will therefore be counted with the rest of the state's ballots tomorrow.

4. Here in WI if you pass away before election day your early vote or absentee ballot
does not count.

12. That's bizarre
WHat happens if someone votes on election day, comes out of the booth and has a heart attack? Do they scrub their vote too? To be consistent, they'd have to.

18. No, because they cast their vote on election day before they died.
Even given that, I'll take Wisconsin's voting process over nearly any other. We have early voting, you can register at the polls, and in 2004 with 3 million ballots cast there were only 300 provisional ballots. Now that's good.

19. Different states have different rules.
Here in Wisconsin convicted felons may vote if they have served their time and probation. In other states they are banned for life.

27. how do they tell
which early vote is yours? Absentee ballot maybe (although you could vote absentee, die out of state and not have the state notified until way after the election, if at all), but if you cast a valid early vote how can they tell what you voted for?

If the vote was valid when cast it should be counted.

23. Very glad to hear that...my sister's MIL died last week...
and she had cast an absentee ballot too - knowing that she would be gone before election day. (She had stopped having her kidney dialysis, saying she was tired and ready to go.)
