My students did election projects that I put up on the bulletin board in the hall. They are booklets with pictures of the candidates on the front. My classroom is right across the hall from the girls restroom. Today the kindergarten teacher brought her girls down to use the restroom and one of them noticed my kids' projects. She pointed up at the pictures and said "Who is that mean man with Obama?" Her teacher said "That's John McCain". Then the little girl put her hand on her hip and said "And WHO is that mean lady on TV in the glasses who keeps saying those bad things about Obama?"

Hey now, if a 5 year old gets it . . .

3. They really are.

We used to do mock elections every time there was a presidential election. I am not sure why we don't do them anymore, (probably because we can't relate them to "the test"!) But every single time we held a mock election, the kids always chose the Democratic candidate. Going back to 1976, and even during the Reagan years, the kids always voted Democratic.

They aren't stupid. And most kids can see which candidate talks more about things kids care about.
