With Dems controlling everything, they should make Election Day a Nat. Holiday |
|
As we all know, the easier it is for people to vote the more it benefits Democrats and Americans in general. Creating a National Holiday for Voting is something Dem's should most certainly think about.

2. Yep. And how about making Washington DC a state while they're at it. |
|
People there have been disenfranchised for too long. And we could use two more senators and a congressperson in our camp, too... Win-win! :D

Just look at any Sunday. Whose off? White collar workers. Whose working? The various service industry workers. Hotel maids, cooks, dishwashers, waitstaff, cashiers, nurses, police, emergency workers, firefighters, bus drivers, retail workers. People making less than $50K are the bulk of the holiday workers. Those making $100K+ have a holiday.
They need to open the polls for a full 24 hours on election day, so it will fit into the schedule of shift workers and the 8 to 5 people who have to get their kids to daycare/school and pick them up after.
Another thing, as I rant. We need to call out those businesses who run election day sales, thereby competing with the hours the polls are open now. ***OK, when I get off of work at 5pm, do I race back to my precinct to be in line before 7PM or do I go to the appliance store that's running that one-day election special on washing machines? I can't do both and my washer is making strange noises and the polls say my one vote isn't going to mean much to my candidate.*** Oh yeah, and those businesses are always festooned in red, white and blue, celebrating our right to vote.

4. I have often thought this would be nice since it is our greatest duty to this nation. |
|
That we should always vote so that Democracy lives and breathes.

5. Except that public transportation would have to be made to run as usual. |
|
Otherwise it prevents voting.

6. I prefer the Oregon model |

Go to an all mail-in ballot system. Far less expensive - far more potential for voters voting.

I voted absentee and liked it a lot, though I was a little annoyed I had to buy a stamp.

7. Hey, I've been thinking that too -- so it must be a good idea. |

Elevate voting to the high level it deserves.
I really see major changes being made in the election/voting process with an Obama presidency, and making it a national holiday would signify it's importance.
We should have parades, and celebrations commemorating the protection of voting rights and the continuation of democracy. It should be taught in school again.
Voting is a big deal, and it should be treated as such.
