Just a word about Dixville Notch and why it went dem this year |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 06:03 AM by cali
First of all there is no town of Dixville Notch. None at all. There's a Grand Hotel called the Balsams, set in the middle of nowhere on 15,000 acres, miles from the nearest town, far closer to Canada than Concord. Most of the voters are long time hotel employees. And Hotel business is sharply off. This is all about the economy. Business hasn't been so bad at the Balsams ever. And yeah, I know this for certain.
Oh, and it's incredibly, breathtakingly beautiful in an almost otherworldly way.

1. Sounds like you have been there and know your stuff |
|
There is a typo in the first line you might fix. Thanks for posting and GO OBAMA!

2. Been there many times and my son |
|
is in a chef intern program there. He didn't vote there, however. The Hotel isn't even open right now.

3. I bellhopped there one winter and one summer when I was young. |
|
it's particularly nice up there when the leaves turn colors in the fall. We used to go to Sherbrooke and Montreal for excitement.

Such a depressing city. (but I've done it too. Sherbrooke is only about an hour and fifteen minutes from me)

6. HA. well, compared to Colbrook , NH it was fun. I would get my |
|
haircut there. this was awhile back and I had grown up in a tiny mill town in Maine so I wasn't so worldly at the time.

5. Yup, you are right. Coos County is hurting in general because of the |
|
economy. I love it there and NH is all about the tourism business. My father in law lives in Lyman, NH so we go up there to visit all the time and stayed in Randolph this year, in Coos County. Beautiful place. But NH relies on tourism so much and if they are hurting, they won't vote McLame.
