It sounds like the kind of thing that precedes "elections" under dictatorships: Riot police being readied for "civil unrest" during a presidential vote.

But the location is in the United States. According to an internal memo acquired by the local NBC News affiliate, Toledo, Ohio police officers have been ordered to "have their riot equipment with them Tuesday and Wednesday."

Police chief Mike Navarre told the network officers will carry equipment similar to the gear they used during 2005 race riots.

"They have been asked to have their helmets and their gas masks available tomorrow and Wednesday," Navarre said, "That's the equipment they would not normally carry with them on a normal day."

i know plenty o racists.
most of them are not thrilled with obama.
while their "morals" are despicable, ignorant, paranoid, irrational, and bassackwards, it boils down to just that- despicable bassackward irrational paranoid ignorance.

yes, there are violent groups of racists, thugs whose deepest emotions are stirred and who see violence as a solution. but i seriously doubt that the numbers of actually violently motivated racists outnumber the rest of them, nor do they outnumber the rational citizens of this country.

i think the very fact that obama has made it so far and with such immense popularity suggests that racists are a dying breed in american culture.

all that said, i just read yesterday morning on salon that many racists are actually voting for obama. some are doing it because they do not like mccain and are simply voting against him. some of them are doing it to "prove" that their "prophesied" race war will begin upon the election of a black man. and i suppose once they see that will never happen, perhaps they will get over their hatred and paranoia.

there's nothign wrong with preparing for disturbances, but they themselves said there were no suggestions they will happen and if that video is from today then they are truly guilty of sending the wrong message.

my guess is they are scared of race riots in an obama loss, based on the past.
