******* THE OFFICIAL "HOW LONG WAS THE LINE" THREAD ******
Alright.. Please post below after you voted so we know how turnout compares this year to 4 years ago:

In the Subject Line just put your state & time waiting in line and then in the body please post if that is longer, shorter or about the same as 4 years ago.

I'll start!

40 people in line at 2 minutes to 6AM. Only reason I made my 6:30 train was because people who didn't have to get to work let me sneak ahead of them. Many smiling people in that line.

Edited to add: I never had a line before today. Always vote between 6-6:15AM

Something about that "Chuh Chunk" as you pulled the Lever, cast your ballot, the curtain opened and you thanked the poll workers........

The energy was electrifying and everyone was being so kind to one another. That experience alone gave me hope that we are headed towards brighter days.

Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 09:35 AM by lisa58
...my husband and I walk to the firehouse every year to vote and usually we're the only ones there. Today we saw the traffic going in and out of the parking lot as we approached the building. There were people there with their kids and two machines (that's usual). There were two people in front of us, and while we were waiting to vote about eight people arrived.

The woman manning the voting machines said that there were over 200 voters since the polls opened at 6:00AM. We close at 8:00PM so I'm gonna bake something for them and bring it over at about 1:00PM and see what's going on.

It was an absolute honor to vote for Obama today!

10 min when the polls opened, but the line was unusually long. I was #10, and there were a dozen behind me. Typically there isn't a line.

Seemed like mostly straight Dem ticket voters from what I gathered. I think that's what we'll see here in SW PA.

I did hear about problems with some machines in the city. Hopefully that's cleared up by now.

Fairfax County. Arrived at the polls at 5:40 AM (slept horribly last night). Line was about 100 long and growing fast. Voted at about 6:25. Lines moved very quickly because they had opitcal scan ballots as compared to the touch screen machines used in 04 and 06. My wife went at 9 AM and there was no line.

Just got back from voting for Obama (and Dennis Shulman). About a four-minute wait. Usually, I'm lucky if I encounter one other voter. Today, there were five or six others waiting in line to get their voting slips, and the election people told me they'd been through 200 voters already.

I arrived at 7:40am and there were about 200 people in line ahead of me. I was done a little after 9:00am. The line was moving kinda slow, but people were in good spirits and pleasant overall, so the wait wasn't too bad. There were about 12 machines for voting.

In 2004, I lived in a different precinct and voted a different time of the day, so I can't really compare the two experiences.

In and out in 15 min. No problems, my registration was in the book even though my drivers license has a different address. I brought a couple of utility bills along with me, and there was no problem. I voted on a paper ballot which took about 10 min to complete. It was a great and easy experience for me, hopefully that's is a good omen that we've got this thing in the bag! I took the next couple of days off from work as I have been having heart issues. I'll be glad when this is over and Barack is our president.

Here's the funny thing though. I was looking at the page of registrations on which my name appeared and in the boxes where you are to sign the form, there were quite a few that had a message that the person was not eligible to vote. I saw many more of these than makes me comfortable... There were at least 6 on the page where my name was located.

The poll workers told me that I'd arrived at a good time as there were some long lines about an hour before I'd arrived.

48. Mercer County NJ steady stream of voters at 7 AM but little or no wait
Our polling place had about six or seven districts set up at separate tables, two voting machines per table, about ten people in line at each table being with a steady turnover of voters maintaining that number while I was there. It took about ten minutes to vote. The parking lot was full and all the streets around the polling place were lined with cars. I drove by later and the parking lot was still full but there empty spaces on the street. Heaviest voting I ever saw here. I expect it will be heavier later as people vote after work.

Not because there weren't lots of people voting.

It is because they had enough booths & volunteers to keep it going smoothly. There is NO reason for these long lines.

The sign in books had been switched with another location. They sent a guy out to make the switch and he brought back the wrong books for yet another location. So at this point this has affected at least three polling places.

During the time we were there, we saw people leaving because they had to get to work, etc. We live in the most liberal zip code in the state of Missouri.
This smells mighty fishy to me.

I spoke with an Obama campaign worker and he told me that there are lawyers on the scene who are working to make sure the polls are open for the full 13 hours.

If you were a part of this fiasco and had to leave, please, please make it back and vote."

hope this is being taken care of!!!!!!

60. It took me about 5 minutes to vote and my husband 10 minutes in New Jersey.
But there was definitely more people at the church than there had previously been and there was a buzz in the air.

We went a little after 9am, and from the looks of it, there was definitely a rush before work.

It's early yet, I suspect people will go after work. I did see a couple come out as I was going in, they had a McCain/Palin bumper sticker, but the looked like they were going to either cry or puke...:D

But keep in mind it's normally half that time the last few elections i've gone to this polling place. I got there at 7am on the dot and there was already a small line and lots of people driving into the parking lot. I'm not sure how much this differs, since normally i would vote after work but I not working today so i went first thing.

73. Suburban Boston...
I voted at my local elementary school at 10:30.

Tons of cars pouring into the parking lot.
Policeman directing traffic (that never happens!)

In and out in 5 minutes.

That's because the polling place is super efficient. State name and address, get ballot, go to one of at least 24 booths, fill in little ovals, drop ballot in scanner and leave.

(I wore blue jeans, blue sweater and a blue vest. Oh, and the sky is very blue today!)

74. SW Ohio, suburb of Dayton
Got there at 6:10, about 10 people in line; when the polls opened at 6:30, there were roughly 50. When I left at 6:45, everyone was inside. (Vestibule was big enough to handle 50 people.)

In 2004 I voted about an hour or so later, and there was a long line and a wait. If I had to guess, I would say this year is comparable to 2004, if not a little heavier. I'm going to be going past my voting location in a little bit and I'll be interested to see if there is a line outside, or if the lot is full.

we were number 38 and 39 in our precinct. I've never voted this early in the morning, so I don't know if that's the normal "before work" crowd or not. We used the traditional style mechanical voting machines because NYS hasn't approved any electronic ones yet. AS far as I know - they haven't even found a testing process that's fool proof!

My youngest pulled the switch for Obama and we both put our hands on the lever to register my vote - she won't turn 18 until March. We got home in time for her to make her school bus.

I can't compare to last election, because I'm voting in a new precinct, so I have no basis for comparison. I arrived at election "rush hour" which was 7:15 am and finished voting about 9:15 am. My precinct was well organized and it went smoothly. Paper ballots to boot! My two hours were spent outside on an beautiful, unseasonably warm, sunny day. It was actually a treat to be outside, so no one was grumbling. :D

and then some! Everyone was is in a great mood, because it is a beautiful, sunny day and the precinct was well organized, but there were so many people who showed up, it just took a long time to accommodate us all. It was a really great experience. I moved over here from Uptown, so I was accustomed to crazy long lines, but quick voting at Jefferson School, due to the large auditorium accommodation, so this was a new experience for me, and a very fun and pleasant one. :hi: former neighbor.

this is good. I live in Central CA, a very republican/fundie/mormon/homophobic/assbackwards/etc. area where the religofascists are on the street corners with their children waving signs saying "Yes on 8" and cars drive by and honk their approval.

It is good that there are no lines here.

My Mormon neighbor was my poll official and he said "Good Morning, isn't this a nice day?" To which I replied "It's a BEAUTIFUL DAY!" I then proceeded to vote DEMOCRATIC and NO on 8.

124. Berks County, PA - We voted about 10:30 this morning, there was
no outside line, 6 people ahead of us inside. We have been using electronic machines for several years now with NO problems.
We were # 233 & 234 for our polling place, nearly twice the number we usually get for a presidential election. (For some local elections, we have been as low as 12 & 13) There were no lines, but there was a constant flow of voters entering and leaving the building.
Our county has 95,000 registered Republicans, nearly 146,000 registered Democrats, so a large turnout will help a lot, but we ALWAYS go Democratic in the national elections.
Vote if you haven't already - every one counts!

GOBAMA!

See ya after.

127. Massachusetts. 15 min.
It turned out to be the 7AM rush, on our way out there was a very short line, compared with the 40-50 in line when we arrived.

However, optical scan ballots can easily be filled out by a few dozen people at a time, so the line went quickly. Our precinct is always a well-oiled machine on voting days, in any case.

We were also interviewed by a local TV station (whdh), I think partly because we were the only ones there with kids (5 & 2.5) along for the ride. The reported chuckled when I referred to a potential McCain presidency as an 'endless disaster'.

130. Delaware, 17 minutes
The line was shorter than 2004, I believe. But it could be due to more machines.

131. Boston (downtown) - 1 hour. Idiots don't know how to redistrict the city.
Precincts 7, 8, and 9 all voted in the city library. Precinct 9 was a 1 hour wait, whereas precincts 7 and 8 were only a few minutes. The city obviously needs to either redistrict these areas or provide voting resources proportional to the voter populations.

I don't recall ever having to wait that long before. I take it as a good sign! (I live in a red part of CA)

134. Richmond, VA - Looks to be at least 2 hours. Also problems getting to the polling place.
Polling place:
RANDOLPH COMMUNITY CENTER
1415 Grayland Ave
Richmond, VA
23220-6002

There was a huge line when I checked this morning with people all the way down the sidewalk in rain-jackets and holding umbrellas. The one-way street was almost blocked off by a huge truck. And a police car was sitting at the unmarked detour. It looked like a huge mess, there.

137. Looks like Virginia is a major flustercuck, according to the voter protection sites
This year. :(

Funny, never had a problem when we were solid red.

The Our Vote Live blog has 774 reports from Virginia, including mine, and my area, Newport News, is second (only behind Fairfax) in number of reports.

At least people aren't leaving because of the rain.

140. Upstate NY small town Berkshire, less than 5 mins.
I drove up and there were six cars parked at the polling place. Inside, 2 voters and 5 poll workers. Waited maybe 2 minutes. It's this way pretty much every year. Lady at the voting booth joked saying "sorry you had to wait in such a long line!"

Town population about 1200. Sometimes I like living in a small town!

144. MN. No line. < 5 minutes.
I went at 9:30 today because I took the day off just in case. I was the 311th person to vote, my daughter 312th. This doesn't seem extraordinarily high as usually several hundred people are there in the early morning as some of the bigger employers encourage folks to vote before coming into work. We were given 2 hours off for this purpose.

1220 people voted in our precinct in 2004 and Bush won it with 53% of the vote so it is a somewhat conservative precinct.

Poll workers were asking each other how soon they think they will know who won the presidential race and one elderly man said begrudgingly it was going to be an early night. Good sign as most of the poll workers are elderly parishioners from the Catholic church I vote at. They are all fair, helpful, and honest people so no worries about voting issues despite them being Republicans.

147. Buffalo NY suburb - 20 minutes
I have been voting in this district since 1980 and I have never seen anything like this. The original line was out the door. Then we found out there were 4 districts in the same room. Once the lines started funneling into district lines things went much faster. I only had 5 people ahead of me. This is a huge turnout for my area.

150. District 8 Bucks County PA- 40 minutes. Not a happy experience.
I don't mind the lines. It was the people I was in line with. Nasty, hateful people.
No one was taking the Democratic sample ballot. Lots of representation for Repub. candidates.

But when leaving, fair amount of cars with Obama stickers in parking lot.

That was the number outside, not sure how many were inside. When I left there were around 250/300 waiting to get inside.
Much higher number voting this time.

154. Louisville, Ky, 10 mins. and I had a different polling place last cycle
Turn out was fairly heavy and one of the poll workers said we had more than doubled the primary final tally at noon and that the morning started with about 60 there waiting when the doors opened.
