************Official "What're things looking like in your neighborhood/state?" thread********* |
|
My 'hood is a solidly middle-to-upper-middle class exurb in north Phoenix and we were at the polls before they opened (this is hubby's first GE as an American citizen!)
We were several hundred feet back already and waited over an hour (plenty of booths, too). When we left, the line was almost a tenth of a mile long and parking was not to be found!
It is going to be a lovely morning tomorrow; do you feel it as well?

walked right in and voted. Suburban Minnesota (Bachmann's 6th district) When I hear about the long lines, and people waiting 6 hours in other parts of the country, it makes me angry. Our first issue must be equality in the voting process. It should be this flawless and easy for EVERYONE.

Gov. Corzine and Sen. Menendez live in my town and I heard there was a line at 6:30 AM where Corzine votes. I'm a few blocks down from him so I vote in a different place. It took me less than 20 minutes to vote. I even got to work early because I had expected a longer waiting time.

I live in an apartment complex in Lexington and while we most likely will be a red state, I am amazed at the number of people who are voting in my precinct. Our polling place is the rec room at my complex and a friend waited 1 1/2 hours, she got there at 5:45 am and there was already a line for the 6 am opening. I went up at 8:30 am and had to wait for 50 minutes. There are tons of Obama supporters who live in the complex but...we will see what happens. As wonderful as it was to vote for Barak Obama...it felt so good to vote against McConnell, knowing that there is at least a chance to get rid of that a^%h*#e.

4. long lines in Park Slope, Brooklyn |
|
Waited for about 45 minutes just to get into the school where the voting was being done and then another 45 mins inside the gym on the various lines to get to the booth - have to wait on one to get signed in and receive a card and then another to wait your turn to go into the voting booth. ED 24, mine, had the longest lines. Crowds were in good cheer, for a bunch of NYers waiting around, lots of people were there with their kids and taking pictures. All around people were remarking that they've never seen such turn a turn out.

6. Long Lines in Fort Mill, SC |
|
We arrived 45 minutes before the polling place opened to find long, long lines out the parking lot, snaking down by the road.
We were right behind a few Obama voters, and I would say the line was 50/50 white/non-white in nature which is comforting.

Not so awesome statewide.
But here in my neighborhood and at work, it's Obama all the way. There's not a single McCain bumper sticker or sign in my entire complex, but Obama stuff is everywhere. Same for the surrounding neighborhood. Saw a van drive thru with a McWhimpy bumper sticker the other day, and it felt like I was staring at an alien.
Snuck an Obama button onto my collar at work today. Getting lots of positive feedback.

Big Big turnout early in the upperclassmen area of Madison, WI. I would assume by the time I left, counting people in line, 500 people had voted, 1 hour into the polls being open. Ive heard now its a little lighter, but steady. THere should be increased turnout later in the day once kids are done with school

My home office is the second story and our polling place is the church directly behind the house – nothing in between but the parking lot. I could see the lot was pretty full at 7 AM. By 8, I noticed the fewest number of cars up to that time, so I told my partner "Let's go." Zero wait. Plenty of booths. Diverse group of poll workers.
We're in a pretty conservative neighborhood but have had no trouble with our Obama/Biden yard sign. There was one interesting occurrence involving Prop H8: One day my partner saw the fundy type neighbor from across the street chatting with our next-door neighbor (a long-retired Marine in his 80's.) A few minutes later, a Yes on 8 sign appeared on Joe's lawn as well as fundy-dudy's. Joe has the corner lot and fundy-dude has the house at the head of the "T", so the placement of the signs gives the impression that they speak for the whole cul-de-sac. (my perception, at least)
Well my guy stomped into the garage and about 10 minutes later was pounding his own No on 8 sign into the ground. A couple of days later, Joe removed that "Yes" sign.
(edited because punctuation is powerful )
