I officially didn't join until 2003, but I used to check in regularly, following the front page, Bob Boudelang, Hate Mail Bag, Conservative Idiots. etc.. right from the beginning. I also wrote an article for DU in September 2001 about what an asshole I still thought Bush was, even right after 9/11.

I think I see some old-timers coming out of the woodworks today. Are you one of them? Did you ever think you'd see this day come?

I'm in Eastern WA state and come from a very strong democratic background -- my grandfather spent almost 30 years in the state house and the senate and he just retired a few years back. I've been here since 2001 - mostly lurking. If I had not found Democratic Underground after that horrible election I am convinced I would have gone into a lasting state of depression. I told my husband that George W. Bush would have us in a war within two years and we would be lucky if he and the Republicans did not destroy the country. DU saved me and all of you who were out there then have my undying gratitude. He's already got Colin Powell, Ken Adelman and Michael Smerconish in his corner (not to mention Eisenhowers, Nixons, Goldwaters, Reagans and Buckleys!): In short, he's convinced the bulk of what stands for "intelligentsia" on the right. it won't take much to cast an even wider net. The only hardcore group that is likely to remain out in the cold are the hardcore fundies. Even there we'll see occasional defections.

193. I found DU around March 2001 and joined later in the year

I found DU through an internet search, having been in a state of disgust and depression since the 2000 election. I could not figure out why more people did not continue to talk about the theft; I did not realize until much later that the MSM was prohibited from continuing to talk about the controversy of it. Bill Press, who starred on the Spin Room, with Tucker Carlson, did continue to talk about it, and found himself unemployed. The controversy over the election was considered a threat to national security, and this was the rationale this mis-Administration used with the networks and cable companies.

Once I found DU and realized there were many, many people who had not "moved on, and gotten over it" I knew there was nothing wrong with me. Oh yes, there was one unforgettable article by Vincent Bugliosi regarding the Constitutional issues surrounding the way the election was decided, and there were plans forming by some to impeach the Supreme Court Five which was much discussed here. The announcement to forge ahead with this effort was to be made a 5:00 pm on September 11, 2001. Imagine that.

Paranoia abounded regarding the Bush* mis-Administration allegedly ordering sites likes this be monitored. I remember there was a period of a day and one-half when I quit posting for fear I would lose my job. I worked in an area where posting about the theft of an election would not be looked on favorably (and that is putting it mildly). After my hiatus of staying away for a day and one-half, I realized I had to risk whatever to maintain my sanity and I could only do that by continuing to participate here.

I have had many wonderful experiences since I have been here, including three marriage proposals!, and I believe it has made a stronger individual (and a better citizen) out of me. Additionally, I have made some wonderful friends who I otherwise would never have met. I feel I owe the founders of DU a lot.

Earlier tonight, I was thinking about my jumping up and down, screaming at the TV when the Supreme Court handed Bush the presidency back then.

I really am on the verge of tears tonight not just because Obama, an African American, is winning but because my frustrations, bitterness, anger, sadness weren't for nothing. I'm so glad MY side is winning for a change.
