My idiot fundie mother in Northern Virginia just texted me....
She said, "I fought off a group of young black men honking car horns and shouting at people about your guy."

I said, "Yeah, well, people are excited. It's an historic day. So did you vote for McLame?"

She said, "Nobama"

I said, "I didn't see a Mr. Nobama on my ballot. Does Nobama=McRage?"

Now she won't text me back.

Damn it. Last time I talked to her, her plan was to not vote at all. Apparently Fox and Rush got to her. I'm really really disappointed. My parents have been so brainwashed by the Dobsons and the Limbaughs of the world. They have lost all ability to rationalize or use basic common sense. It's a sad fucking day when you realize you are smarter than your parents.

10. Without a Democrat to bash, the last 8 Thanksgivings have been pretty dull.
I predict this year will be SUPER FIESTY! My sister and I are the ONLY Obama voters in my entire large extended family. I plan on doing some first class gloating this year.

22. You didn't hear? Thanks Giving will be canceled if McRage
loses. Next year it will be the out lawing of xmas and everyone will get to observe Romada which I probably spelled wrong, then again, it took 6 months of whinning from a born again to get me to stop spelling chirstian as christen lol. Heck why do you think I post xmas instead of spelling out the word? You know I'm sure going to miss being told merry xmas in the same mono tone as they say paper or plastic.

Then Easter, but we will keep Holloween as liberals need the sugar fixes their kids bring home, after all its kind of hard buying sweets with food stamps all americans will be living on when the stock market fails from all those bad loans to the poor that those damn liberals forced Banks to hand out.

25. Even though I've ALWAYS known that I'm smarter than my parents,
I would never let their political views get in my way of treating them like the loving parents they've always been. I owe everything I am to them. That includes being a Democrat.

So are they, BTW.

But I would never turn my back on family or friend because of politics. I have republican friends, we argue, I call them misguided and then we move on. 95% of my family is even more liberal than I am so that's never an issue.

23. I went through the same thing
Neither parent accepted my sexuality, and Mom is pretty much in denial on some level, but as one gets older (I'm 54) you get a new perspective and more accepting of how your parents disappoint you.

31. That's a tough one, luv
It took years for my mom to calm down first that I wasn't going to be a Lutheran minister, slightly less than that to unstick her from the ceiling when I came out. 'S'cool now, we're buds.

OTOH, my mom is and dad was a BIGOLE Dem. That made things a little easier. After a time, they'll realize (hopefully) that you're their flesh and blood, too, and no matter what, nothing on earth will ever change that.

21. It's a sentiment that struck me and made me open this thread.
The thing about it being sad when you find out you're smarter than your parents. I recently had the same revelation a couple of years ago and it made me sad. And the thing that made it clear was how they let religion dictate their approach to an issue. I know this sad feeling spoken of.

They are so obsessed with the Bible and Jebus, it compromises their ability to think logically and have meaningful relationships with their children. Their fundamentalism has and always will be the most important thing... even more than their kids. It's f-ed up.

17. a very good friend is married to
a man 25 yrs her senior. Their kid is a great 17, and loves coming over to play games and play with the dogs. (he also likes people who practice lots of art, and let him get involved in it, too.)

We went to see Faust at the Chicago Symphony. They got the tix, I got the dindin. Being right smack dab in the middle of Fox news' age group (76), he went on and on, repeating every Sean and RUsh line of bull. Finally, I started to correct his facts, and boy, did he get flustered. For each allegation, I provided him chapter and verse of the reality of the situation. Everytime I pinned him down, he changed the subject. Luckily, his spouse and child were applauding my efforts. Apparently, he makes their life a political hell with Fox each night.

I talked to my Mom this morning and for two hours (!) it was Obama is a socialist and a radical and I will be taxed and all my money will be taken away. I had to correct her that as my parents make $100,000 they will not get taxed under Obama. Sigh. Sometimes its better not arguing with family. I tell my parents that we agree wot disagree. My Mother says I am naive and will be dissapointed in Obama. I told her I am 32 and not changing now!

My parents are about taxes, taxes, taxes and are mad that they will get "their" money taken away. As if the Bush tax cuts meant anything, just more debt and a bigger deficit. My parents thankfully are not fundies but think all Dems are tax and spend. I told them at least we pay for our tax cuts!
I pay my taxes, own a house, have two kids. I am not naive.

a John Birch Society member. But I figured, who else will call her?

She listened politely, and then, with a world-weary tone (because I just don't understand)
she said she will write in Chuck Baldwin.

I looked up Chuck Baldwin on Wikipedia. Yikes. But I can't say I'm surprised.

I don't know what is worse as a black person to know these dramas are unfolding within otherwise stable families or to feel good knowing that the children and grandchildren won't carry this kind of fear with them at the cost of that familial relationship.

I take my hat off to you. I believe hate won't rule the day and rift in families will heal over time. In the future, I hope you just won't bring up black people in power.

54. She fended them off with her angry glares, I'm sure.
Despite being raised in a bigoted environment, my sister and I have always thought differently. Even when we were kids. We can't exactly explain why... and neither can they. They did their best to try to make us as fearful of any brown people as they are.

But this isn't JUST about a racial thing. They scream socialism and communism and rant about librul dems. So even if I manage not to bring up black people in power, simply by virtue of me being a Democrat and a lesbian, I'm in for conflict. Sometimes you just can't avoid it. So knowing that, I won't avoid any topic... my silence only implies agreement.
