I going to different NC newspapers, and overall there seems to be lower turnout compared to states like PA and VA where there are hours long lines...but both those states didn't have the early voting numbers as NC did.

When 41% of all registered voters have already voted, of course there isn't going to be bone-crushing turnout on election day.

polls opened, I would estimate that there were 200 in line.

In a normal election, only 10% of likely voters would be left. In this case maybe 20%.

29. It is raining in some parts. |
|
It is drizzling where I am but not pouring. I think the rain is heavier towards the east coast rather than the western mountains. I asked the lady who handed my my ballot about turn out. She said that, for my area, turn out had been a little better than usual. For whatever that is worth. I live in Asheboro North Carolina.

and it's been very cloudy here but no rain to speak of since early, early this morning. NC is a rather large state (more than 550 miles east to west) so we often have vastly different weather in different regions of the state.

to make up the stagger. A low turnout in NC today might work in Obama's favor if that's the case.

32. Not just 41% RV, but 74% of the total that voted last time had already voted! |
|
That's 74 (SEVENTY-FOUR) percent!
2.6 million early voters compared with 3.5 million total voters in 2004.
If total numbers stay near where they were in 2004, and we carry the early votes by the percentage that polls have been indicating, I don't know if McCain could make up that kind of ground!

early voting and good planning... |
|
I live in Charlotte. I work at a school which is a polling place. It has been steady all day - there were long lines early which waned about 8:30 and things were picking up again when I left at 4 pm. I voted in a different precint, only had about a 20 minute wait but there were about 100 people in line. I was the 768th voter at 10:15. I have voted late in the day and not been anywhere near that number. There are almost twice as many machines as usual - I heard on the news they were planning as if 80% would turn out - so I think advanced preparation is helping as well.

That's more who voted EARLY than usually vote AT ALL. So a low turnout on election day isn't terribly surprising.

37. Would it be reasonable |
|
to expect that the early votes would be counted as soon as the polls close? I mean, they're already in the hands of the election officials, why wouldn't they be tabulated (and released) right away? That's the only way to know how well early voting worked for us.

38. To be honest, I'm not sure. It depends on the state. |
|
Some states release the early votes first as their own "precincts". Others hold them and release them with the rest of the votes from their normal precincts. I don't remember how we do it here in NC.
