I wish Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were alive now to see this.
Hopefully they are watching from heaven.

1. Not Rosa Parks? Mary McLeod Bethune?
Don't forget the women who fought.

9. Yes. We women must now keep the faith.
Remembering that the words of the late, great, Martin Luther King STILL applies to women. The work is NOT done.

"I know you are asking today, "How long will it take?" Somebody's asking, "How long will prejudice blind the visions of MEN, darken their understanding, and drive bright-eyed wisdom from her sacred throne?" Somebody's asking, "When will wounded justice, lying prostrate. . . be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men?" Somebody's asking, "When will the radiant star of hope be plunged against the nocturnal bosom of this lonely night, plucked from weary souls with chains of fear and the manacles of death? How long will justice be crucified, and truth bear it?" I come to say to you this afternoon, however difficult the moment, however frustrating the hour, it will not be long, because "truth crushed to earth will rise again." How long? Not long, because "no lie can live forever." How long? Not long, because "you shall reap what you sow."

Hopefully, it will not be long. Hopefully, my daughter will not be called a bitch, or a whore or be judged by her appearance-- or whether or not she shows cleavage or wears pantsuits or cries in public.

When it comes to the status of WOMEN, this country is STILL in the darkest of dark ages. We are still going through a civil rights movement. We STILL have not triumphed. We have a LONG journey ahead. And so, we women must keep the faith.

Maybe not in my lifetime, but in my daughter's. I sincerely hope so. In 57 years, maybe. I hope.

We ARE NOT DONE YET. Not by a long shot.

5. It seems that the women have been totally forgotten. . .
after all, women were not emancipated until 57 years after Lincoln signed his famous Proclamation.
Perhaps, in another 57 years women will finally get their chance. That means it will not occur in my
lifetime at all.

Until a woman sits in the White House, we are FAR from done. Very FAR.

7. What was Malcom X's comment about the role of women in the civil rights movement?
I can't remember, but it was vulgar.

4. And Lyndon Johnson who was able to get a Civil Rights Bill which was being blocked
by the south thru the congress and then the next year proposed and passed the all-important Voting Rights Act of 1965: "We shall Overcome."

6. If RFK had lived
there is no way the world would be as fucked up as it is now. But the bright side is that Obama now gives us hope. It may be 40 years late, but it is here NOW!
