3. I'm worried
Andrew Sullivan has the exit polling on 8:

They show a narrow victory for marriage equality: 52 to 48. Every ethnic group supported marriage equality, except African-Americans, who voted overwhelmingly against extending to gay people the civil rights once denied them: a staggering 69 - 31 percent African-American margin against marriage equality. That's worse than even I expected. Whites, on the other hand, clearly rejected discrimination: 55 to 45 percent. Latinos were evenly split. But what matters, of course, is the margin of all the votes. It's still an exit poll, and those polls sometimes under-estimate anti-gay sentiment. So no assurance. But some provisional hope. If marriage endures in California, this debate is over - in America and the world.

I'm a lesbian who has worked her ass off since January to help elect Obama. This is hard. Our rights should matter.

7. The African-American vote in the exit poll was very disheartening: 69-31. There are plenty of Dems

who voted for hate while also voting for hope and change.

10. African Americans don't make up a significant portion of the electorate here
Let's not blame AA's.

Thanks.

12. Oh I am absolutely not blaming them. They comprise less than 10% of the electorate. I just find it
sad that the vote went this way.

14. I feel the same way
I'm disappointed that one disenfranchised group would deny rights to another group.

16. That is NOT a reflection of ALL African Americans...
...please remember that is just the one's they polled. There are a great many AA glbt's that got out and voted against this crap.
I know quite a few AA's that consider themselves Christians that voted against this--who considered it a civil rights issue more than anything else.

The media promotes division, let's try not to help them.

2. It's passing, but it WILL FAIL
Right now the rural areas are what is keeping it above 50%. Once the urban cities start to report, the 5% lead (which has been decreasing since the polls closed) will close up, and I have absolute confidence that it will fail.

From CNN's Joe Von Kanel and Hal Quinley of Yankelovich

In California exit polls reported thus far tonight, Proposition 8 appears to be going down to a narrow 52 percent to 48 percent defeat. The proposition would amend California's state constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. Earlier in the year, the California Supreme Court issued a ruling making such marriages legal under the state's constitution

If the trend holds, younger, first-time voters can be said to be responsible for Proposition 8's defeat. Voters between the ages of 18 and 29 opposed the proposition 66 percent to 34 percent; voters 30-64 were evenly split; voters 65 and above favored the amendment 57 percent to 43 percent.

...many, many paper ballots to count in California. Please don't give up hope.

I've watched footage of huge boxes of paper ballots being carried into warehouses, and listened to reports of record numbers of paper ballots. Lots of results left to report.
