Post here what you were doing when Obama was announced the winner |
|
I was at Finnegan's Wake in Philly, where one of the major afterparties was happening. We all counted down the seconds until they announced the winners of the western state. But instead of announcing who won what state CNN announced that Barack was President-elect

I run one of the local precincts. One of my clerks was getting text messages keeping us up to date on the electoral votes. All five of us poll workers were dems, and our polls had closed, so we could celebrate a little bit at the precinct as we packed up and did the count. :patriot:

getting ready to head out to the LA Volunteers Victory Party!
When we got there it was so crowded that we were told we would never be able to get in. We went down to the underground garage, and crowded up to the door. As people left (! for what possible reason?) the exact same number of people were allowed in. We were practically the last ones in before Obama began his speech.
It was my wife's first political victory party.

...at the WA 5th LD Election Party. On MSNBC, there was a "countdown clock" for the closing of the west coast polls and, as the seconds ticked down, of course all of us Washingtonians joined in the count. As the clock reached 00:00, the screen was flipped to a photo of Obama with the simple text "PRESIDENT" as the anchor (David Gregory) announced that, with the addition of the seventy-three west coast votes called immediately as the polls closed, MSNBC was projecting Obama the winner. Needless to say, I was back on my feet again in seconds, and it was pandemonium in the room for several minutes, as MSNBC wordlessly showed us crowds throughout the U.S. celebrating.
There are two moments I will never forget from this decade: the Red Sox winning the '04 Series, and Obama being announced as our 44th President. The feeling was the same each time.

Found out that my 11 hr day was really a 15 hr day about noon. I had spotty campaign coverage while working but when I got in the truck to load out I turned on our local Progressive radio station and they went almost immediately to McCain's concession speech. I had to listen to Obama's acceptance speech on the radio on the way home. I got home right at the end of the speech.
It's OK though. It's enough that we won.
Yes We Can.

28. It was weird for me... |
|
i.e., I was waiting for California to be called on CNN at 11pm ET, and instead saw Barack Obama being projected as the President-Elect. WTF?!
So - I was reclining on the couch with a big 'ol sinus infection debating whether to have a beer and relax. The pronouncement took me by surprise, though I really knew deep down that McCain could not conceivably win at that point...I blame a raging case of PTSD from the last two presidential elections, always thinking "it's only over when it's over."
But I watched the resulting festivities with great pride and joy. And I will remember it forever. So yay!

I watch the countdown to the West Coast numbers. When 8:00pm struck, I was expecting the CNN election logo. I did NOT expect the "BREAKING NEWS" screen. In that split second, I knew. Sure enough, a split second later, there was Wolf B. standing in front of their big wallscreen with the words "Projection: Barack Obama Wins". I yelled out "He did it!".

40 years ago, I was at the Ambassador Hotel when Bobby was murdered. I'm only a few blocks from where the Ambassador was. Now it's been raised and a school is being built. I shed a lot of tears over the years as I walked along Wilshire blvd thinking of what might have been and I almost lost hope that all was lost.
Tonight, for the first time in 40 years, I have hope again!

But I already knew Obama would win an hour before that, when I was on the campus of City College in San Francisco where I had a class. Someone had a laptop with an Internet connection, and I saw that Obama had 207 EV's not counting California and Washington. Those two states combined have 66 EV's.
EDIT: Even before it became official, I texted my friends saying "Election is pretty much over. Obama will be our next prez."

|
...after picking up my free coffee for voting. I've never been to Starbucks before as I don't care for the image. In Europe you get great coffee everywhere (even McDonald's), not like the brown water in the U.S. I was listening to the radio, wondering how long it would take for McCain to concede or whether we would have a repeat of 2000, when the announcer said it was over. It went quite quickly, actually, and I was stunned for a minute or two. By the time I reach my driveway, the burden of the last 8 years was gone from my shoulders...and I was smiling.

We screamed and honked and acted like total idiots all the way to our hotel, where we arrived just 3 minutes before the speech.
Whew.
