1. It's baffling to me too.
I can only assume that most of the people who suffered so badly are now in other states.

2. It didn't "go red," it has generally been red.
There are many who vote against their own needs and I honestly don't understand it sometimes. My parish, however, 79% for Obama! :) Nary a McCain sign in the French Quarter or the outlying historic neighborhoods.

3. i wonder how many african american families were displaced from the state.....
....or supressed from voting.

i'm wondering if a lot of the katrina victims relocated to texas....obama came within 10% in texas. that was an incredible finish in the lone star state.

i'm not sure how else to explain LA.

4. The people most affected became refugees
And moved to other states.

That's pretty much the full story.

5. They gentrified and there was a diaspora of the Black & Poor/Lower Middle Class community.

That's my estimation.

6. a lot of blue fled the state...
that's about it. The good news is that the South, Jackassistan as it was described to me, is isolated. It's time for some tough fucking love. Let's educate and love the fuck out of our unreconstructed rebels. You will all love President Obama. Repeat after all of us...

7. it is true, you do not understand Louisiana

I'm from there. Everywhere except New Orleans (where I grew up, and has a 70% black population), you will find the most backwoods redneck idiots imaginable. Those in-breds were probably happy the black people in New Orleans suffered through Katrina.

12. Yup. I'm not from LA, but heard a LA redneck saying the Katrina victims deserved what they got.

13. he's not considered "black"
louisiana is all about black and white. i went to a school that was 50% black and 50% white, and exactly one latino. all of the racism in louisiana is directed at the black community, because there really is no other substantial minority - at least where i lived in New Orleans. So I think Jindal, besides being blessed by Bush, is viewed more as exotic than a threatening black person.

11. I'm from Louisiana...
still have family there, and despite electing Jindal, they can be as racist as they come... all my sane friends left after high school, and for good reason. i have family whose houses were absolutely destroyed in katrina and they blame nagin and blanco but have nothing to say about bush. it's embarrassing.
glad i'm in new york.
