McCain gave a good concession speech last night.
It was starkly different from his core supporters (and Palin) in tone.

1. He really did - that was the McCain I thought he was in 2000

15. I thought he almost looked relieved
No matter how much he may have wanted to be president, I think all the campaigning took a toll on him. He looked awful, and was grumpy most of the last few months. The country's economy is in terrible shape and he was stuck with a VP that he no longer even liked, let alone wanted to be stuck working with for the next 4 years. He couldn't come out and admit it but I couldn't help thinking a part of him was relieved he didn't win and that's why he was able to give such a good speech.

2. And yet his supporters were still jerks
Imagine that. Too bad he didn't encourage a more positive tone in his campaign. Fortunately Obama took the reigns during his speech and welcomed the entire country aboard the train heading to the White House.

He and Palin still believe the things they were saying over the past week. They need to just go away. Obama can be polite with McCain but Palin needs to be marginalized.

8. Yes. He dumped another load of bullshit on everyone.
Now he gets to be McCain the bipartisan healer. I don't think so.

5. Yeah. Whoever wrote it did a good job.
If he had used *that* personality the whole time we might have been in trouble. Oh well! :)

It was genuine too. His audience seemed to get it, which is hopeful.

10. I think he's trying to avoid being shunned in the Senate.
Also, I'm sure he's known for weeks that he was going to lose, so he's had plenty of time to get used to the idea.

I think he should be shunned anyway. Slimy two-faced backstabbing lying bastard.

14. In his defense, his party is rough on conciliatory candidates
and have in the past, worked against such Republicans cutting off support.

He was as gracious as anyone could imagine last night. Far more classy than his knuckle-dragging supporters.

12. It was the speech of his life.
Too bad the audience was booing. (I guess that answers why he couldn't speak like that during the campaign. He'd have lost his "base".)

(with their thinly-veiled racism and blatant McCarthy-esque guilt by association tactics) that the 527s were running nationally in the days and even hours leading up to the voting???

"Country First," my ass. Sorry, but I am in no mood to be conciliatory or gracious. The entire lot of Repukes need to be bundled off to insane asylums or war crimes tribunals.

20. OK, I've got you. I kept expecting McBush to denounce or
repudiate the tactics employed on his behalf by various surrogates. Instead, he constantly seemed to be engaging in the "wind-n-nod" stance towards those tactics. So I found his words last night hollow and devoid of any meaning that would engage the "better angels" of my nature.

17. He was a statesman. He was a gentleman. He showed grace.
I am glad he lost. He was running from an untenable platform.

But hopefully he will live up to the promise of his concession speech and work to get this country back on track. Now he is unencumbered by the "Politics of the Right" and can work across the aisle as he has done before.

I always admire someone who can concede with grace.

18. He doesn't have to kowtow to anyone for the next 2 years.
I doubt he'll run for reelection so the next few years are his chance to do whatever the hell he wants. It'll be interesting to see how he votes on certain issues now that he doesn't have to feed the beast.

John McCain was a televangelist, crying about how he sinned against the Lord.

27. I agree. He was surprisingly gracious. And what's sad is that it was probably his best..
in the whole campaign. He allowed the fundie right of his party to take the wheel of the Straight Talk Express and it cost him big time. And, judging from his tone last night, I think he knows and regrets it. Ah well...
