My Head is Buzzing and I Can't Stop Smiling
I woke this morning with that faint smile on my face -along with a dull buzz in my head, like many here at DU I would suspect- and deep down warm knowledge that things were now going to change forever.

I went out last night to see some very happy friends and family and had too much to drink and way too much fun. My car sits at a friends house and I'm 26 bucks poorer for the cab, including a 6 dollar tip for a fine American Democrat cabbie. I'm pretty sure I'm going to throw up before seven and man, I feel good.

I'm not sure if I've slept or not but at some point I either had sex with Susan Sarandon in the Lincoln bedroom or I had one hell of a dream and I'm okay with that either way. Last night is still mostly a frenzied and fuzzy blur that I plan to sort out some time later this afternoon. After it's called for President Elect Obama, after McCain speaks, after President Elect Obama gives his towering speech, and after I take my first shot of tequila I only remember bits and pieces.

My sister, a low info and reliably Dem voter, said to me, "In all my life I've never seen a speech like that, not from Kennedy, not from Clinton, not from anyone!"

First shot. A toast to our new President.

"Finally, a President we don't have to be ashamed of." Offered one friend.

And another.

"Did you see the crowd in Chicago?" My brother in law asked. "It looks like America, all of America!"

Everyone toast! Sure, why not.

We decided to do a shot for every President ever elected but thankfully we could only remember to John Quincy Adams, or maybe it was Jackson. At some point I'm fairly certain the theme from Shaft was played and we were all bad mothers.

And then this morning. This morning. I woke with that smile, that buzz in my head. I turned on the TV to drown out the buzzing and Joe the Morning Idiot is warning us how disillusioned we will be by Barack Obama. I just smile. Pat the Fat Old Racist Pundit eats up all the crumbs Joe drops, eagerly and with great outrage. I just keep smiling. On the Span I hear from a southern woman, the accent is a dead give away, that President Elect Obama is not from here and a secret muslin. Still, I'm smiling. Faux news is full of praise for McCain, and doubt about President Elect Obama, but I'm just grinning.

Then, just as I sit down here to write this, I realize why I'm all ear to ear with glee. It comes down to two simple words, words that have never made me smile before.

Supreme Court.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go throw up.
