10million + voting bloc -- what would happen if we abstained from voting last night? |
|
Recent census statistics put the adult gay community at around 10 million in the United States. That's 10 million + people who actually stated publicly, "Yes, I'm gay." That doesn't include gays under the age of 18. What would have happened last night if, as a voting bloc, we withheld our vote? America would not have elected her first African-American President. I'm not laying blame on anyone here at DU for any of the Propositions that passed handily last night (and couldn't have passed without the help of Democrats sadly).
What I'm saying is this, it's damn disappointing that the gay community is counted on to elect Democrats but we can't count on our fellow Democrats to help us achieve what we shouldn't even need to fight for, civil rights. Until the Democratic community realizes that if they don't help the gay community, this will always be a wedge issue in elections and 10million+ people are going to feel disenfranchised the day after an election until we too are allowed to enjoy the inalienable rights that the rest of America shares.

1. Prop 8 hasn't won yet. It's still to close to call. |
