A handy guide to not pissing off your gay fellow DUers
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 12:46 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Take a statement about any aspect of GLBT rights.

Cross out the word "gay" and replace it with "black."

Ask yourself, "Would I be comfortable saying this as now phrased, or would I sound like a crazy bigot?"

That will save a lot of wear and tear.

The alternative is to present an ethical or moral case for distinguishing the rights of those two groups of human beings.

Thank you.

I am a hetero white male, but keenly aware that I did not choose any of those traits. As John Rawls says in A THEORY OF JUSTICE, imagine that all the souls of those not yet born can see the world and get to design the ethical system of the world they will be born into, but no individual soul knows the circumstances HE will be born into. That way lies Justice.

1. Interesting suggestion.. Let's put up a ballot initiative in Califonia
to outlaw blacks, hispanics, orientals and anyone else not both white and protestant from marrying.

See how THAT would fly!

6. Sadly, that would receive quite a few votes.

2. I once heard a speaker recite all the statements that are commonly
made about gay people with "gay" replaced with "straight," and people were beside themselves laughing. Made the point very effectively.

5. Well said! K&R
We straight white males need to back up our GLBT friends, and being considerate is a prerequisite.

8. it's interesting to see some of the biggest champions of gay
rights on here are straight DUers and some of the biggest apologists for lukewarm political support of our rights are some of our fellow gay DUers (ie. gay McClurkin incident apologists) who should know better. :hi:

9. Excellent advice
It's sad such a basic idea has to be spelled out like this, in a place like this, but it is clearly necessary.

10. Ironic
since I saw a distasteful thread earlier blaming black people for infringing on GLBT rights.

lessee, so if we use your suggestion: how would YOU feel if I said it was you GLBT people that caused Obama's defeat if he lost because you hate black people?

shoe.other foot.

11. Please don't go that route.
The blame game is bringing this joyous occasion down into the dumps and it's getting old. Accusing anyone of bigotry doesn't help the issue but can push some to hold tighter to their beliefs.
